At a grand public meeting of- many
thousand excursionists, including repre
sentatives of the patriotic societies of
New York and New England, t he Society
of Colonial Wars unveiled, September 8,
a fine monument upon the field of the
battle of Lake George. September 8, 1875.
The governors of New Yorlc, Vermont,
Massachusetts and Connecticut were
present at the unveiling, and there were
Jetachmeuts from the regular army and
the troops of the several statf p. Srrator
Chauncey Depew delivered the oration.
The bronze figures of the monument
were designed by Albert V. Elnert.the
sculptor, and represent the Indian chief
tain, King Hendrick. demonstrating to
Gen. Johnson the futility of dividing his
forces. The figures, which stand on a
granite pedestal, are nine feet Iviph. The
monument stands in the center cf Battle
park, overlook ing the laic. On the east
face is the followlrg inscription:
"1903 The Society of the Colonial Wars
erected this monument to commemorate
the victory of the Coloninl forces ri der
Gen. Johnson and the Mohawk allies un
der Chief Iler.drick over the French regu
lars, commanded l.y Baron Dieskau, with
the Canadian and Indian allies."
On the south fnce it reads: "Defeat
would have ope&cti the road to Albany to
the French." On the north "Confidence
inspired by the victory, was of Inertim
able value to the American army In the
War of the Revolution," and on the west
face are the words "Battle of Lake
George, September 8, 1755."

The trade In carbonado, or Brazilian
black diamond!, which, bo late aa five
years ago, wa worth nearly (4,000,000
a year, Is at present practically dead.
These stones, first discovered !n 1843,
are a kind of black, opaque and imper
fectly crystallised diamond, found only
in Brazil. Tbey are less dense than
the white diamond, but actually harder,
and were found of Immense value for
mouuMng in the steel crowns of rock
boriag drills.
It was the eloctric furnace, worked by
the tremendous water power of Niagara,
which put an end to the e.arbonado trade,
says Stray Stories. A mixture of sand,
coke, sawdust and salt melted together
in this amazing heat resulted in the
formation of masses of beautiful crys
tals, ranging from blood-red to pale
blue. These hava been named carborun
dum. They are almost as hard as the
diamond, and Indestructible in acids to
which the diamond yields. They cost
less than a quarter of carbonado, and so
have displaced it
