Jay Cooke Dead. Philadelphia, Feb. 16. Jay Cooke, whose fame as a financier is world-wide, and who was closely associated with the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad and the development of the Northwest, died tonight at the home of his son-in-law. Charles D. Barney, at Ogont?. a suburb of this city, aged 83 years. He had been suffering from general debility, the result of old age, for several years. His condition was not considered serious, however, and his death tonight came rather suddenly. Last Monday he entertained as his guests 123 young ladies attending the Ogonfz gchoi 1 and their friends. On that occasion he ap peared to be in good pp'rits and was the last to leave the reception room. Mr. Cooke's family, relatives and friends were notifitd of his illness early today, and many of them were present when he died. None except his clo et neighbors knew tie was ill. Illr Lumber Order. (Quarter mipter-general Humphrey has awarded to the Portland Lumber Company the contract for supplying 2, 140,457 feet of li mber, to be used in the construction of Aimy buildings in the Philippines. The shipment will be made by steamer direct from this city. The amount involved in the order is something over $20,000. Bids on this lot were opened December 20. Some stockmen estimate that 50,000 bead of cattle were killed by the recent blizzfcrd in Western Kansas RDd Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. Mr. Reid purchased the property from Robert Smith. F. 8. Stanley, W. S Dwinnell and L. C. Stanley. Messrs. Smith and F. S. Stanley are Portland capitalists, Mr. Dwinnell lives in Minne apolis and F. Crawfordsville, Iod., Feb. 16 Hav ing failed in health tor several year?, General Lew Wallace died last night in this citv at the age of 78 years. Present, at the deathbed were his physicians, his wife, his son, Henry Wallace, of Indianapolis, and the latter's wife. Death came peacefully and, bidding farewell to his family, the author of 'Ben Hut" whispered that he was ready to meet his Maker. With this he lapsed into unconsciousness, and soon pasted away.
