pleasure in demonstrating that one or
another portions of the human body is
dispensable, if not a superfluous posses
sion, says the Providence Journal.
Those who are conscious ot such an im
pression will be glad to learn that so
doughty a champion as Sir William
MacEwen, who occupies a prominent
position in the front rank of modern
physicians, has entered the lists to com
bat the widespread belief that the
vermiform appendix, which in recent
years has formed the piece de resis
tance for many an eager scalpel, Is an
objectionable and dangerous member of
the hnman machine. Less learned
physicians than the Londoner have
argued gravely to attentive patients
that the appendix is simply a disease
cenfer, a'trap for irtitating foreign sub
ffttajacs, serving no good end, and to be
disposed of at whatever expense of
money, pain and even deadly peril.
Sir William must be credited with
speaking whereof he knows in saying
that "some Burgeons have freely ad
tcrjitted that when making an incision in
: patient for some other. disease they
frequently remove the l.ttle organ as a
precaution against appendicitis."

Air Ship Shows Its Paces at Eos
Angeles.
Los Angeles, Cal., Dec. 25. Captain
Baldwin's airship California Arrow,
driven by Roy Knabenshue, who made
peveral successful flights in the same
machine from thb World's Fair grounds
at St. Louis, was given its first trial in
Oaliioruia today and and was success
ful, with the single exception of its
failure to land at the starting point. A
landing was effected half a mile aay
without damage to the machine, aod it
was safely towed back to its anchorage.
The Arrow started from Chutes Park
baseball grounds, in the southeastern
part of .the city, at 3:17 p. m., sailed
with the wind northeastward for a dis
tance of between eight and ten miles,
thence eastward for two miles and re
turned in the face of a 12-mile gale to a
point directly above the starting place
but owing to the supply of gasoline
running short, was unable to effect a
landing at exactly the desired spot.
From the time the airship arose from
the baseball grounds until it was safely
anchored at Pico and Stanford streets
it was in flight an hour and 13 minutes,.
and in that time sailed a distance of
probably 20 miles.
When flying with the wind the Arrow
traveled at a speed of 20 miles an hour,
and in reluming directly in the face of
the Btrong southeastern gale, was able
to make a rate of speed reckoned at be
tween six and eight miles an hour. The
airship was maneuvered by Knaben
shue in every direction, responding
readily to its rudder, circling and turn
ing in either direction, sailing directly
in the face of the wiod or at an ang e,
and rising and dipping as the operator
directed."
The Arrow rose at times to a height
