The Baptist Sunday school will giye a Christmas entertainment tonight. -- Dr. T. A. Snook and family left on Wednesday's train for Pendleton. Atty. 0. E. Woodson was an outgoing passenger Wednesday for Portland, Work at the Willow creek coal mines has been suspended for holiday vacation. Otto Metschan left on Wednesday's train for Portland to spend the holidays. A movement is on foot to organize a Temple of Rathbone Sisters in this city. Oscar Mitchell and W. H. Babb, of Echo, were registered at the Palace, Monday. Lou Biebee and Garfield Crawford went to Portland today where they will spend the holidays. C. C. Powell was in from Spray Thursday after a load of freight for Mi nor, Gilliam & Co. The Mistes Lulu and Grace Hagerleft Wednesday for Pendleton, where they will visit friends. Mrs. A. Tillaid and grandchildren, Amelia Sleeves and Johnnie Barr, left Monday for Portland. Win. Dutton who is attending busin ess college in Portland, came home Monday to spend the holidays. There will be regular services in the Baptist church next Sunday morning and evening. J. W. Mount, pastor. Mrs. Phil Metschan and daughter, Dorothy, left Wednesday for Portland, where she will visit relatives for seyeral days. The ground was covered with a light coat of snow Friday morning but soon disappeared under the influence of a chinook. Heppner streets are now covered with mud almost equal to Willamette valley towns, but there is no complaint about the warm rains. Mr. and Mrs. Harford will arrive in this city this evening. Mrs. Harford is state president of the W. C. T. U. She wi 1 lecture here next week. The Women of Woodcraft will hold a special meeting on December oO, 1903. for the purpose of initiation. They were accompanied by tneir daughter, Elise, who is attending the Fort'an 1 Academy and came home to spend the holidays. The new Baptist church was dedi cated last Sunday at lone. State Mis sionary L. W. Riley, of McMinnville, was in attendance and helped to con duct the services. Rev. J. W. Mount and Judge Thos. Ayers ot this city, at tended the services. Grand Patron Weiganrt and Grand Marshal Mrs. Miller, were in this city Friday ou their way home to Portland. They had been to Monument to assist in instituting a Chapter of the Eastern Star. The Chapter starts with a mem bership of 26. Master Pearl Bucknam, of Sumpter, is visiting bis grandmother Mrs. L. Elder. Andrew Rood, Jr., who is attending school in .Portland, is home for the holi days. Wayne Stannard, of Brownsville, is a guest at the residence ot Mrs. J. L Ayers. Miss Carrie Behrens left Monday morning for Denver, Colo., where she will be married to F. N. Sorenson. L. W. Riley, of McMinnville, State Missionary of the Baptist church, held services at the Baptist church in this city Monday evening. County Commissioner Dillard French of Gurdane, was in the city Monday. Mr. French states that he has not fed anv so far this season and his cattle are n good condition. Very little feeding has been necessary so far this winter bv Gurdane stockmen. Mrs Claude Gatch, of Salem, Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter, i Kastern Star, inspected the Heppner t Chapter Saturday evening. There was a large attendance. The evening wa3 a very pleasant one. Mies Bertha Mat lock rendered two recitations. The meeting was hell in the K. of 1'. hall. Mr. McGee, a Seattle horstbuyer who was in the city the past week, made few purchases owing to the scarcity of the kind of horses that he wanted. lie was locking for heavy draft animals for the Seattle market. There will be a big Christmas shoot at the grounds of the Heppner Rod and Gun Club, in this city on Christmas day. There will be eight events four in the forenoon and four in the after noon with liberal purees of added money. A number of the crack shots of Eastern Oregon will be present and the meeting is being looked to with in terest by Heppner sportsmen. A loud report with an explosion that shook the buildings in the vicinity of Stewart & Kirk's livery stable, just be fore six o'clock, caused considerable ex citement. Who set off the blast or what caused the explosion is unknow n. Just where the explosion occurred was not ascertained until yesterday when the place was found in the vacant lot next to the liyery stable. Appearances would indicate that the explosion was caused by setting off a stick of ginnt powder, but w hat for is still a mystery. Iturplary at I. one ICork. A. R. Stanley's general merchandise store at Lone Rock was burglarized Tuesday evening. Thieves entered the building by going through a window.
