Assessor Strain's assessment of the
O. R. & N. in Umatilla county has been
practically completed and shows a raise
from about $4(00 per mile to $13,000 per
mile. The railroad company is expected
to carry the matter to the board of
equalization of this county and further
if necessary, but Assessor Strain says he
will stick to the assessment, on which
he has been working for montns.
Strain's theory is that railroad property
should be assessed on an equal basis
with real estate and personal property,
and as everything is being assessed at
one third of the selling price in Umatilla
county this year, the railroad has come
in for a heavy raise.
