J. M. Keeney, of Shaniko, was an in
coming passenger, Tuesday evening.
Attorney W. II. Wilson of The Dalles
was in the city this week, attending
court.
J. A. Aiken and wife, and father C. II.
Aiken, are visiting George Aiken, of this
city.
J. II. Kinsman and family have gone
to Albekirk, New Mexico, to spend the
winter.
Some very fine samples of coal were
brought in this week from the Willow
creek mines.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. J. Cut rin, of lone,
were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
AyerB, Thursday.
The Masons have been making some
very much needed improvements in their
hall the past week.
Rev. J. W. Mount, pastor of the Bap
tist church, of this city, is in The Dalles
assisting in revival work.
Miss Oia Fuqua went to Pendleson,
on Monday morning's train, where she
will visit with. relatives and friends.
Mrs. Geo. McKnight went to Portland,
Saturday morning where she will visit
relatives and friends for several months.
There were seven horse buyers in the
city this week. There is a good demand
for heavy draft horses, which are scarce.
S. F. Kobison, Ohas. J. Huston, John
Huston and C. A. Harrington, of Eight
Mile, were registered at the Palace,
Thursday.
Earl Johnson, who has been visiting
relatives in this city for the past two
weeks, returned to his home at Walla
Walla, Saturday.
Miss Elise Bartholomew arrived in
this city, Tuesday evening, from Van
Ness Seminary, San Francisco, to spend
the holidays at home.
Mrs. T. H. liishee announces the
marriage of her daughter, Lillian Mae,
to Kev. Charles Wentworth, in Hepp

A young man by the name of Wade,
who was working on one of Tom Mat
lock's ranches, was taken to Portland
Saturdav. to be operate. 1 upon for ap

tist Convention, will preach in the Bap

Circuit Judge W. K. Ellis convened
circuit court in adjourned session at the
court house Tuesday. The court is still
in session in winding up the accumu
lated business.
While attempting to lead a wild horse
from a stall, Sam Meadows was quite
badly bruised yesterday by the horse
squeezing him against the side of the
stall. His injuries are not serious, Dr.
Kistner is waiting on him.

Ayers.have returned from Pendleton,
where they were attending the irriga
tion meeting. They are welt pleased
with the interest shown, and were well
treated by the people of Umatilla
county.
Thomas Raby was taken to Portland
Monday morning by Rev. J. V. Craw
ford, to have his leg amputated, which
was badly fractured some time ago,
in an accident on Dead man grade. Mr.
Raby has been laid up for some time
and has made no improvement. It was
thought best by his doctors that he be
taken to a hospital and have the injured
leg removed from below the knee.
The case of the State of Oregon vs.
Goshen and Gilbert, charged with cut
ting and leaving down fence on land
not their own, came up for hearing be
fore Justice Williams yesterday. Dis
trict Attorney T. G. Ilailey appeared
for the State and G. W. Rea for the de
fense. The following jury was em
paneled: J. W. Matlock, A. M. Gunn,
John Jenkins, George Goto", Otis Welch
and Campbell. The jury failed to
agree on a verdict, being equally divided
as to opinion. The fence was cut on
land owned by the Penland Livestock
and Land Co.
