Claud Knowles who waa there im

very rough and mountainous and he

half. Over the Bleep hills and moun

made 18 miles to D. A. Herren'e place
in one hour and ten minutes, making
the last 12 miles in 40 minutes. At Mr.
Herren's place be pulled the saddle
from bin exhausted steed and continued
his wild ride to Heppner on a fresh
horse, arriving here just one hour and a
half from tbe time he started.

as soon as possible arriving at 12 o'clock
in the night.
Mr. Shahan had regained conscious
ness and was suffering intense pain.
The blast struck him full in the face.
( n the upper lip on the left side he has
a very bad cut. Ilia face is a mass of
bruises. His eyes were filled full of
mud and sand, but the eyesight wan not
injured.

Ha is now resting well and will recover.
All that saved Mi. Shahan from in
nt rit death was the fact that trie blast
was well tumped in the rock and the
main force of the eiplosioii went ir.to
