SHEEP NOTES.
The movement of Arizona sheep is
now beginning to be en in foil swing.
Three carloads of spring lambs were
shipped to Chicago from the Ketchnm
stock yards, in Idaho, June 22. It goes
on record as the earliest shipment of
lambs from Idaho to eastern merchants.
No previous shipments have ever been
made before the middle of July.
The opening of the northern Montana
wool market shows price? from two to
four cents higher than last year. Eight-een-cent
wool on the Great Falls market
seems to be almost a certainty, and 19
cent wool is probable. Such a showing
is better than the wool men of northern
Montana would have expected last year.'
The 6rst wool sold was thatof the "trail
er" band belonging to J. R Long G. Co.
of Great Falls, and the price paid was 16
cents. The sheep were mostly yearlings
and had been started from Great Falls
several months ago, driving east. At
the Long shearing pens near Glasgow
the band was shorn and will be shipped
from that point on to the feeding farms
of the firm in Illinois and south St. Paul.
There were 45, 00 fleeces in the lot and
the we:gl.t was m.i.h i pounds. The
Long yearling band was driven last year

Star Route Box Delivery.
Notice is hereby given to the public
that the contracts in effect July I, 1902,
for tbe performance of mail service on
the star routes in the states and Terrf-
toriea hereinafter named provide that,
in addition to carrying the mails to the
various post offices, tea carrier will - be
required to deliver mall into all boxa
and hang small baga or eatcbela contain
ing mail on cranea or post that mar b
erected along the line of tbe font tin
der the following regulations of the de
partment; Any person living on or near the ro1
and not witbin the corporate limits of
any town or witbin 80 rods of any poet
office, who desires hla mail deposited at
a given point on the line of tbe route by
the carrier may provide and erect a Bail
able box or craoe on the roadside, loca
ted in such manner as to be reached as
conveniently ha practicable by tbe car
rier witbont die mounting from the vehi
cle or horse, and such person shall file
with the postmaster at the post office to
which bis mail is addroased (which thall
be one of the two poet offices on the
route on either aide of and next to the
box or crane) a request in wrltlnf for
the delivery of his matt to the carrier
for deposit at the designated point, at
tbe risk of the addressee. The amaH '
bafr or eatcbei above described, as -welli
as the box or crane, must be provided
by tbe person for whose oee it is intended
without expense to the department.
It shall be the-autv of the postmaster
at every such oet office, opon a written
order from any person living on or near
the route, to deliver to the mail carrier
for that route any mail matter placing
in tbe respective satchels, where such
are used, tbe mail for the persons to
whom euch satchels belong with in
structions as to the proper mail box or
crane at w hich said mail matter shall be
deposited ; but registered mail shall not
be so delivered unless expresstv re
quested by the addressee in his written
order. No mail matter so delivered to
trio carrier shall be carnetl pt amrjttier
post office on the route before being de
posited into a mail box or hung on a
crane or post.
The carrier on the, route will be re
quired to receive from any postmaster
on tbe route any mail matter or private
mail satchel that may ba entrnsted to
him outside of the usual mail bag, ond
shall carry such mail matter or private
mail satchel to and deposit it into tbe
proper mail box or hang it on tbe proper
mail crane placed on tbe line of the
route for this purpose ; such service by
the carries to be without charge to tbe
addressees.
The mail carriers must be cf good
character and of sufficient intelligence
to properly hand e anJ deposit the mail
along the route.
The department doei not prescribe
any particular design of box or satchel
to be used for this semes, but tbe per
son providing either should eee that it
is of euch character as to afford ample
protection to his mail. If there ia a lock
attached to the box, a key ia not to be
held by the carrier, as he ia expected 10
deposit the mall without the necessity
of unlocking the box. The box or crane
should be eo located ou the roadside
that the carrier can deposit the mail
without leaving h vehicle or horse,
and yet not wtere X will obetYnct pub
lie travel.
The carrier is not required to collect
mail from the boxes, but there is no ob
jection to bis doing so if it does not in
terfere with his making the schwdule
time. The law provides that eery car
rier of the mail shall receive any mail
matter presented to k'.na if properly pre
paid by stamis, and del vr the same
for mailing at the next peat office at
which he arrives, but that no fee shall
be a ! it' ! hint therefor
