weather is re ported from all parts of Cen
tral Kurope. There have been heavy
storms ir, France, Germany, Austria aod
Belgium, with iireat damage to crops.
The continuous rains have caused serious
inundations in Northern and Eastern
Hungary. The l'.iver Szamos, in Tran
sylvania, has overflowed its banks and
flooded several towns and villages. In
tense cold prevails throughout Austria,
and the vineyards and fruit trees there
have been darna'd. There was a heavy
snow fall yesterday in the C'ateline Alps.

Judging the fcitnation entirely by its
statistical position the facts are un
questionably favorable to the theory of
higher prices, but it is of coarse a ques
tion how far it would b safe to judge it
in this w y. There is incontestably
lees fine wool in the world to day than
for a long time, and the present indica
tions are that the supply will remain at
a relatively low point for a very con
siderable period. The email offerings
at the London sales this year aresignifi
cant of the diminished stocks of wool
now available, though it is of course
poeslble to attach too much importance
to the shortening of the London cata
logues, as it must be borne in mind that
this result can be traced in some meas
ure to the tendency of consumers to
buy direct in Australian, markets
total sales in such markets being, for
instance, 1,029, 80V) bales this season,
against 753,906 bales the previous sea
son. All in all, fine wools are likely to be
as scarce during the next year as they
have been at any time in recent years,
as scarce perhaps as they were in 189
and 1900, when it wai estimated that
the Austrailian supply was marketed at
17, 10b. per bale, as against 10, 13s.

recent advices bring pitiful accounts of
the drought in Australia, and the sup
position is that not only will the next
clip in that quarter of the world be eeri
