The March number of the Pa
cific Monthly is a valuable work
of art. The issue is devoted mostly
to the Columbia and the grand
neerjery along the great river. The
beautiful views in this number are'everv mnw fra.-tion
alone well worth the price of a j making a total 5-j delegate, is a fo!
yeat's subscription to this maga
zine. This magazine i doing great
work in advertising the state, and
is a publication cf which Oregon
should be proud. Especially if it
valuable to people who are inter
ested in the early factory of Ore
gon, as the Native Son department
publishes, from time to time, bits
of history that have never before
beD made public.
A representative of one of the
department stores of Portland, was
in the city this week, distiibuting
catds and soliciting orders. It is
to be hoped that be did not do
much busi&e6s. If the people of
this community would thiak just
a little on sound business princi
pals, these people would soon get
tired of cocitg here. In the first
placa, tie houte is wealthy, which !
spread ol socialism ami so
brought the couvors.atiou to an
eud. The Presideut will enforce
the laws as thoj staud uutil they
are repealed or amended.
It is not safe to assume the truth
of all stories of this kind, but no
one can have much acquaintance
with rich men without learning
that fools are as plenty in that
class as ia any other. Tho fm't
that they accumulate aud retain
wealth is evidence that they under
stand their particular business,
which is not iucoDsistaut with ig
uorauce and folly in other matters.
The really gieat men of ti nance
are. of course, wise as well as rich,
and perfectly understand that
"vested iuterests" are far more
deeply concerned than auv other
iuterests in restraining the excesses
of capital, preventing it from op
pression aud compelling it to obey
the law. If any railroad man spoke
to the President as reported he
was very foolish, and not a repre
sentative of his class. The mu-t
