Primaries March 29 -Convent!
April 6.
The Horrow County Democratic
Central Committee, met at the court
houae Buturdav lant.
The meeting wa called lo order at
2 o'clock p. m. by chairman Geo. W.
Well. Secretary H J. J,eeier was
present to keep a record of the business
transacted.
The apportionment of delegates to
the county convention waa based upon
the vote cast for J. W. Matlock, sheriff.
Tbe apportionment was one delegate
for every 15 votes, and one for fraction
over one half and one at large from
eacb precinct. This will make a con
vention of 55 delegates.
The primary voting place for .Matte
n pneinct wa fliel at (iilliam A
Bisbee'a war-houae, corner of May and
Chase streets.
The voting place at lone were lef; to
be designated by J. A; Woolery.
It wa decided to hold the piimarie
on March ami the county convention

of the O. K. A V. Co., was in the city
Monday. Mr. Connell was up looking
after the road improvements between
Heppner and Heppner Junction. The
new 00 pound steel rails are now laid
a'niot hall the distance from Heppner
Junction to tbis city. A force of men
has been engaged for some time, the
wo-k being commenced at the junction.
The road bed will he pat in first claas
condition and new ties will be put in
where ever needed.

SENATOR MITCHELL'S WORK.
Senator Mitchell will offer im
portant amendments to the rivers
and barbers bill when the measure
reaches the senate, eays the Ore-
gonian. The bill as reported by
the house cemmittee Saturday con
tained liberal appropriation for
the rivers and harbors of the
Northwest The amendments to
be offered by Senator Mitchell will
b eren more favorable. They
have been referred to the com
mittee on commerce of the senate,
and a copy has been received by
the Portland Chamber of Com
merce. In the house bill 11,000,000 is
authorized for contracts to be en
tered into by the Secretary of
War, for improvement of the
month of the Colombia. Mr.
Mitchell will try ti make it tX
000,000. For continuing improve
ment the house a; ; ropriates $oo0.,
000. Mr. Mitil fii will propose
$600,000. For the lower Willam
ette and Columbia rivers the house

Samuel Eogle, a pioneer of 1S4-5,
died at his home at Molalls,

A shipment of 400 head of beef
cattle were sent from Ontario to
La Grande, and will be taken to
the sugar factory yards for a fin
ishing touch of pulp feeding.
They are from the D. K. ranch of

on alfalfa till in fair condition,
and it is thought that 6ix or eight
weeks on beet pulp will put them
in prime condition. This is the
experiment made of shipping feed
ers in for fattening on pulp, and
will be watched with much interest.
