The ort'HDiiitiou has signed its
own death warrant
It is tUted that the Chinese ex
clusion bill which will be before
coDpress in a short time, stands a
good show of being passed and be
coming a law. The friends of tb
bill, which of course come princi
pally from the West, are working
very hard for its passage, and the
Western people are very much
interested. It is a tact that the
Chinese Minister has been allowed
more privileges in exertiLg his in
fluence against the measure, than
evt-r tried by any foreign repre
sentative, in matters of national
legislation. The bill in itself is
plain and will furnish no compromise-
Its purpose is to exclude a
race of people whose presence
in this country would be detri
mental to the interests of Ameri
can labor. It is not strange that
Minister Wq is vigorously oppos
icg the bill.
In the Government report of the
wool clip of l'Ml we find Oregon
in the secoud class of. states pro
ducing the heaviest average of
flVec. In the first class there
are only four states New Hamp
shire, Vermont, California and
Texas. Io these states the aver
age weight of fierce was eight
pounds or over. In the second
class are ten states, tiz: Massa
chusetts, Iowa, Kansas, Montana,
Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho,
Washington and Oregon, the av
erage being seven pounds. The
statistics given show that the East
no longer holds the great sheep
state. New Yurk fulling into the
third class in the ah-ove rating, and
Ohio and Pennsylvania into the
fourth. Of the dozen leading
states according to averages, the
East holds but three. Ex.
the foreign commerce of Japan,
which amounted to less than t0,
OuO.000 yen in 1S78, has grown to
over 500,000,000 yen iu 1900. Iu
the year 1881 Japanese imports
from the United States formed less
than 6 per cent of that country's
imports; in 1900 they formed 22
percent During the same priod
the share of Great Britain's im
ports fell from 52 to '25 per cent.
The trade of the United States
with Japan has increased remark
ably, one reason being that this
country is Japan's best customer.
Of the total exports from Japan,
amounting to 198.000.000 yen in
1900, 5'2,5(6,0O0 yen worth came
to the United States, and of this
more than half consisted of silk.
The imports of Japan from the
United States have grown with
even greater rapidity than her ex
ports to this country. While the
imports are likely to increase with
clos business relations and cheap
er shipping facilities, our sales will
grow even more rapidly. We buy
only a few Japanese staples. We
can sell hundreds of manufactured
products as soon as they have once
been introduced aud the Japanese
have become accustomed to them.
The balance of trade will be de
cidedly in our favor. Ex.
