project will do away with by making
available the municipal credit neces
tary for the issuance of bonds for new
pavements. At the present time
uiorethan 250 miles of Brooklyn streets
more than one-half the whole length
of paTed street have the primitive,
unsatisfactory and unpopular cobble
stones. There are 110 mile of streets
paved with granite. 60 miles, especial
ly in the neighborhood of the parks
and parkways, macadamized; 44 miles
paved with Belgium blocks, 40 miles
w :th asphalt, and one mile with a still ;
more primitive method, practically un- j
known to New York, thouph quite fa- j
miliar in Philadelphia brick pave- ;
liiects. A meeting waa held in the !
annexed district of Brooklyn lat w eek
for the purpose of atritatinp the ques
tion of the improvement of the Vve
cietts of that city, but in this respect, j
aa in some others. Brooklyn, for ob- .
vious reasons, is much behind New
York. I
In this city there are no streets ;
paved with brick, aii'l there is less than
one-quarter of a miie of cobblestone
pavement in all. This is to be found
ia one of the atreeta of the Ninth ward. :
There is a email section of town a par- j
tion of one street paved with wood,
but wooden pavements have lonp atr- j
been votd a failure in practical opera- .
tion in New York. The city has 1-5 j
mi l-s of granite. 142 miles of macad
amized ro&'ls and streets, 04 miles of
nsphalt. and "X miiee of Belgium pave
ment. The city of Philadelphia, much
!arrer territorially than New York, has
331 miles of Belsrium block pavement,
172 of aphalt. II- ma alam. To of vetri-ii-d
brick. 11 of granolithic, three of
slae and nearly 2"0 of cofablestfme.
The growth of an American city is
i-hown clearly by the number of mil-
of inx-rov-d pavement in atreets, and
It i oelieve! by public works officials
that aft-r January 1, l-'Jt. there will be
a visible improvement in all the pave
ments of the city outside of it preset
