Work oil the building of a new court

Judge A. G. Bartholomew and Com
mlssiooer Ed. C. Ashbaugb are now
away on a trip of inspection and inves
tigation in relation to plans and specifi
cations. They will visit several differ
ent court houses in order to be aided In
drawing the plans.
For the past week the question has
been pretty thoroughly talked over by
the taxpayers. The matter of a site
was the occasion of some friendly rival
ry and several propositions were made
to the court.
It has been finally decided to erect the
building at the corner of Chase and
May streets, and the property belong
ing to Banker C. A. Bbea and Dr. Mo
ri words bas been purchased (or thia
purpose, and the matter will be settled
as soon as the deeds can be properly
acknowledged.
This beautiful site will sostths county
only 12000, however, it eoet more than
this, but the difference was mads up by
business men who wanted the court
house placed there.
The new building will be a flnestruet
ure and will probably be built of stone.
The old court house will be used for a
county poor house.

A correspondent writing from l'endle
ton to the Spokesman-Review nays:
"Heppner has begun the construction
of a wagon road into the SusaBville
country. This move has been sprung
with startling suddenness on Pendle
ton's business men. It is a coup d'etat.
Pendleton Las wanted the trade of the
interior and the men of the interior
wanted to come to Pendleton. Both
sides thought there was enough in it for
the other to start the road. While they
waited Heppner stepped in and a gang
is at work now at the Heppner end.
Ibis correspondent is a good news
getter. If such a move is on foot it has
been sprung with startling suddenness
upon Heppner's business men also.
There has been considerable talk about
a road from Heppner to Ritter, but wind
work has been the prineepal amount of
labor performed on the proposition.
The East Oregonian, in a long article
about the matter, says that it would
cost $75,000 to build this road, but the
E. O is about a far off on this as the
Pendleton correspondent. $2000 would
build a fairly good road trom Heppner
to Kilter, end there is already a very
good road from Hitler to Susanville. As
it is the Bussnville and Hitter trade
divided up between Heppner and Pen
dleton, however, if this proposed road
was completed, the people in these die
would rather come to Heppner on ae
count of being much c'oser.

A pamphlet has been issoed by Fred
erick Haynes Newell, of the Interior
Department, ahich shows some facts
concerning Eastern Oregon that are
worthy of note. It aays there are 35,
687.6K0 acres of vacant land in Ore
gon eaat of the Cascade mountains.
This land, while it is not all suscepti
ble of cultivstion, is nevertheless val
uable for farming and grazing purposes.
Perhaps one-half of it could be re
claimed by irrigation and would furnish
homes of K0 acres each to 200,000 fami
lies. Continuing the pamphlet says:
The greater part of the vacant public
landa are within the great interior basin
ths streams of which do not havs suf
ficient volume to cut their aay to the
ocean. The supp'y of water is very
mall in comparison to the land to be
supplied, and it will be necessary to
uss storage reservoirs and well water
wherever it can He obtained, in order to
utilise the land."

Dr. William A. Vi, one of the most
prominent of Portland dentists, senior
member of the firm"! Wise Bros., has
withdrawn his membership in the Ore-
son Stale Dental Society. Or. ise s
action s prompted by his desire to be
free of the bidebuiiit-l rules by which,
underlie iiiime o' ethics, the socisty
holds down its younger members of the
profession in Oregon.
Dr. Wise has practiced dentistry in
Oregon for 15 years, and his lint in the
profession recently has been rapid. He
is now a member nf the Hte'e Board of
Dental Examiners, having been ap
pointed last March by Govsrnor Oeer.
"I have swung clear of the socisty,'
said Dr. Wise, "because its rules
hampered mv progress. The Society
does not permit it members to adver
tise. I have determined to advertise.
I hae be o held back long enough by
the hypociiy of ethics, which is purely
and simply a schrsne to make a close
corporation of dentistry, and keep the
younger dentists from asserting them
selves and becoming known.

Tba resolution passed at a meeting of

not a proper or suitable place to build a

Therefore, it was ordered and ad
