buffalo-chip politicians in the n-puhli-
can party have decided that (ieer is not
a fit man to hold the place for another ;
terin.it is well to consider the possi
bilities of a soda-water statesman of,
different political persuasion. As we
size it op, Oeer is a goner, as fr as
ti.,. rui.nl, I ien nartv is concerned. He ,
has all his life lainhasted democrats
I and populists as flyup-tbe-creeks gen-
eraliy, so inav n neno e.. ,
ination from thorn. The Hi Tinnier;
wing of the republican party has got j
it in for him so bitter, that if they;
can't beat hi rn for nomination they,
will .b.fat him for election. (ieer!
iseeniB to have nothing hut the re--
Hpectable (?) elements of the party to
; fall hack on, and the chances seem to
strongly favor the Hi Hummer wing
assuming its rightful control or burn- j
j ing down the state house in the at- '
'tempt. So. the people might an wel 1
1 look forward to the possibility of he-l
j ing governed hy the enlarged w isdom !
uulnil in A e.olllltrv drill' store. The
republicans ought to like it, for Milt
everlastingly disgusted with a little
biref authority, he acted as body guard
n.l chief maHter of ceremonies or
I Urvan at Lebanon. He kept people, at
fa distance of several rods from Mr.
I Hryan ho successfully that scores of
obi wheel horses had to be glad they
: could ride on the same railroad w ith
the tireat Commoner, to say nothing
of getting onto the same train. A re
porter found a couple of goisJ demo
cratic ladies begging and imploring
1 the Lordly Milton for a glimpse uf
I their hero. But he was lirui as iron
' that no one should get within a stone's
; throw of the man he had stowed away
I in a back bedroom, and who was never
j known to refuse to see anybody when
I he was awake. lie escorted the ladies
I around to the back alley, got them
I through a barn and into a hack door
' when one of Milt's guards wasn't look
ing, knocked at Hryan 'n door and he
! received the ladies in the most cordial
and pleased manlier in his shirt
sleeves, with the democratic simplicity
of a true Western gentleman. The
ladies were delighted and no one was
hurt, but those were the only ladies
that were permitted to see him that
lav, and it took reportorial strategy to
bri'ng that about. What this state
needs is a governor who will stand on
his dignitv and not let the common
herd get at him whenever they take a
notion. A governor who uu't the
least bit exclusive and doesn't have a
conniption tit when some one catches
him in his otlice with his coat off, or
in the hack yard sawing wood, is not
reallv to he compared with a dealer in
evewater who can Ftand peiple off at
their proper distance. If it hadn't
been for him placing a kind ot Swiss
guard around Hryan some old woman
might have rushed in and kissed him
on the northwest corner of that I'latte
river mouth of his, and then it would
have teen all dav with the presidency.
Hy all means, let us have a dignilied
dispenser of paregoric for governor.
Siletu Sentinel: The general con
census of opinion, gathered from cor
respondence, interviews and press
opinions from every section ol the
state, is that should (ieer be able to
carry Marion county which he cannot
possllby do) he would stand no show
w hatever for renoiuination by the state
convention. It is clear that, for
various and sufficient reasons, the
people do not want him again. These
words are written not to express a hope
but as the calm conclusion reached
after a thorough investigation and ma
ture deliberation. The fact is, Kastern
Oregon will demand the recognition so
long deferred and the people will as
one man respond to that demand
whenever the counties of the vast
Inland Fmpire unite their demands
upon one able, popular, progressive
man for governor. The candidacy of
that man, when he is decided upon,
cannot he sticcessiull v opposed by the
few scattering friends of the present
incunihent. A Southern Oregon man in
Salem the other day said everybody
except (ieer was being talked for gov
ernor out that way. And the same
tiling is true of Eastern Oregon.
Milton F.agle: Already are the poli
tical war horses getting ready for the
next campaign and numerous candi
dates have been announced for the vari
ous state oifices. There are two Kastern
Oregon men in the tield for governor.
They ar W. J. Furnish and
Stephen A. Lowell. Hot h are resident s
of I'endleton and both belong to the
republican camp. They are good men
and either would be acceptable to the
members of their party in this part of
t!:e state. It is thought by political
wiseacres that Governor (ieer can
hardly receive a renoniina' ion. I'd
ward l-'.verett Young wants to be stare
printer. He is from linker City ami
is editor of the republican, one of the
principal papers ol that section.
Athena Tress: If Kastern Oregon
republican newspapers are so stagnant
and dilatory in demanding Kastern
Oregon recognition in state politics,
the Tress fails to see where they have
any "howl" coming at the Kant Ore
goiiian, or for that matter, atiy other
democratic journal that ban the finger
and hackhoiui to call the at l en! nut ol
the party in p..er to the needs and
rights, politically, of this portion of
the state. The stand taken by the Ten-dl-'tun
paper and other democratic
papers in Kantern Oregon, did not
develop until after years of waiting
for the republican newspaper craft
to tender their an! and influence in
securing innt representation for 1. ast
ern Oregon in the political voice of the
Mate. Not until it became an evident
fact that the Tortlaml and Western
Oregon sack controlled, in toto, the
entire republican press of tin state,
did the democratic papers make their
call on tfie dominant party for what
thev consider right and justice. iov.
i Jeer and bis sickl ally, the 1'nion
Republican to the contrary notwith
standing, will not deter the election
ot an Kastern Oregon man for governor
of the state in the next election, nor
can they undermine in anv way the
H'.an.l taken by the democratic paper
of the great Inland Knipire. Oregon is
the nnly state in the nnton where one
part bears the bur.len of taxat ion, so
to Sn'k, without representation, and
the other part gets the U-netits, mani
pulates t be state pol it ical arena, ami
dictates Whitehall he who and what,
