The New York Herald's cable
advices troin Paris recently said:
From the latest figures obtain

ie.m Chamber of Commerce here, I Bg. and they aie consequently
has prepared an int. resting report 1 m0re of a factor in the raw mater
upon the prain crop of France, lie j jal market. Thus, for instance, it
says the situation today is ouite ! is safe h- estimate that over bit
different from thst of laft year,
when the crop was also short But
there w as a considerable surplus
from the crop of lS'.W, which
helped make good the deficit. This
year there is no surplus and the
stock of wheat in hand is consid
erably less than at the same period
in 3fHX
In 1900 the French area under
cultivation in wheat was 1(,049-5-10
acres, an increase of 14S,5!)6
acres, or nearly or;e per cent. The
crop came through the first part
of the year in very good condition.
But, unfortunately the severe cold
weather of February and March
and the very backward spring sea
son caused considerable damage.
Tresent indications are that the
wheat crop of France this year
will amount to o04."hi0.000 bushels
as compared with oOO.SSO.fV'O
bushels in 1000. The annual con-
sumption or wneat in ranee is
about "4'00.0or) bushels, and
should this year's crop turn out to
b nly r.OLi'M.''yv0 bushels. France
will have to import at least 36,
000,000 bushels to make good the
deficit."
It is also a recognized fact that
the severe winter which injured
the wheat in France, had a much
more destructive effect upon the
cereal in Orrrcai y. Consul Gen
eral Mason reports from Berlin
that "the e-rea! harvests in Prussia
wjji ,i,ou- t,e largest and most dis-
astrcus deficit in recent years." !
These countries will look to the!
Fnited States to make up this
shortage which will stimulate the
market or our surplus wheat. i

million pounds w ere purchased in
the Boston market the pabt week,
which is largely in excess of the

Judging the wool market entirely
from the standpoint of local con

couraging to the extent that there
appears to be nothing in sight to
make it go any lower. How far it
is likely to be affected unfavorably
by the reeeut developments in
London, it is too early to say. The
industrial situation abroad has ap

had something to do with makinc
