FACTORIES FOR DOG FEED,

C'anln la Maoofrtnrl Wholil.
f me of the two factories in this coun
try for the making of patent food and
patent medicine for do-s hava been de
scribed in the New York JCew&. The
founder of this establishment was a
Scotchman. He w as employed In Lon
don kennels, studied the needs of
dops, thoupht out special treatment
for them and finally bok out patents
on foods and medicines, and in thia
unique business amassed a fortune,
trn the p-round floor the visitor enters
the reeeirinp room of the raw materi
als. Thousands of pounds of butch
ers' scraps are brought here in the
course of a month. iatmeal in whole
sale quantities and tons of herbs are
used. The old-fashioned dog-"s bane,
boneset, eatnip and beef-root, under
various scientific names, find a use as
food or as medicine. The second floor
is occupied by four curious machines,
with great cylinder attachments. Af
ter the fat and meat have tn sorted
they are ground separately in these
machines and then placed in great
wooden tubs where various mixtures
are added.
The next process seems so much like
the ordinary baker's work that one is
quite disposed to taste things, and
when the round and souare cakes of a
trnpting brown have been taken from
the brick ovens one rva'.'.r envies the
aristoeratie dog. A fter e. iling. the bis
eutts are packed in Tieat pasteboard
tnjxes. According to size these boxes
are lalK-led fr pet dogs, for grey
hounds and St. Ilernard. There are
espeotally prepared dishes for cats.
Sufficient fod tok.- p pus-y for two
days may U had f t t've e-nts. Hut it
costs a pretty pt r.r.y to ke-p a dog. A
large dog must have six or eight cakes,
besides a quantity of i:.. at- The meat
eofct pnbab:y aliut ten c ents and the
cakes are four cents apteee. The most
interesting department is that of the
patent machines, at the top of the
building. The mixtures of herr-s and
chemicals are Killed in great kettles,
and the liquid is brought up V this
floor to be put in bottles of various
si7s and lailed "cere for mange."
"liniment for sprains." and to "pre
vent baldness." Sure cures for seven
teen diseases, and pills a -veil as liquid
medicines, are made. This curious ev
taldishrnent also makes dog-collars,
dog soaps, eratek for carrying or ship
ping dogs, dog brushes and combs,
blankets and mackintosh waterproofs,
with hw-ds. for greyhounds.

"Parling." he said, looking down ten

cording to the New York World. "I
have often heard you say that there is
no true love without .self-sacrifice. You
have taught me this great truth, and
row I am going to prove my love; by
giving up something that has been very
dear to me for years. You know how

At this point his emotion appar
ently overcame him. and he looked
down at the sweet face, expecting to
see there appreciation of his noble re
olve, but he saw only a look of blank
disappointment.
"What is the matter? Are you not
glad that I am following your teach
ing?" he asked.
"It is not that." she answered, al
most sobbing. "Never mind what it
is," and she rushed from the room.
The self-sacrificing hero smiled. He
needed no explanation. He had learned
from his wife's nearest friend that she
had set her heart on buying him a
half dozen boxes of eigr.rs covered with
lovely silver paper wrappers, with pic
tures in the middle.
And this is what gave birth to his
noble resolution.
