EXPORT TRADE.
The fiscal var ending June 30,
1901, promises to beat the record
in the value of American exports.
Last vear thev reached the enor
mous sum of tl, 314,000,000, but
the experts of the treasury bureau
of statistics are certain that will be
largely exceeded this year and con
fident that the amount will go be
yond a billion arjd a half dollars.
At the close of March, the gain on
last year was more than $S6,000,
000. In this year's increase the
farmers of the country are the
chief beneficiaries, their products
showing a greater percentage of
increase than thoae of the manu
facturers, while last year and the
year before the manufacturers were
the largest gainers. With this
showing, added to the fact that this
government now owns more gold
than it ever owned before and
more than any other government
in the world's recorded history
ever owned, surely republicans

When tbe hostile Snake Indians over
ran Eastern Oregon in '7S, they eipect
ed the Umatillat to join them. Tbe
Umatillas sat on their war-horses on the
agency knoll and watched the battle be
tween the white soldiers and tbe hostile
Snakes. For awhile the contest was
about even. But after charges and
counter-charges the whites won, and
when the struggte was practically set
tled the Umatillas rode over each other
in their efforts to get on the winning
side. And that evening they came to
the camfires aud tried to ring in on the
soldier's supper.
But they were properly snubbed.
A repetition of tbe above incident is
seen in tbe case of that toeacueroue
sheet, the Heppner Hard Times, when
it made its attempted flop at the close
of tbe campaign.

IT IMPROVES.
As far back as 20 years ago some
ttockmen used to say that the
Ilet'Dner Hills range was all ate
out and the bunchgrass gone,
Tom Avers, the pioneer stock
man, need to dispute this assertion
and say that in coming years the
Heppner range would support 20
head of stock where it was then
eupporting one.
Facts and figures show that Mr.
Ayera was right, and since then

many men rich.
And it almost all came from
grass, with very little cultivation.
The native grasses of the Hepp
ner Hills have wonderful recupera
tive qualities, and where they have
been overstocked and ate out they
only required half a chance, to
grow up again better than ever.

trodden down the big bunches of
coaree grass and caused a perfect
pod of fine grass to spring up on
what was comparatively bare
ground before. Thus the capacity
of the range to support more stock
is increasing, and its future is very

growing all the year round all over
the range, the stockraising capaci
ty of this region will be vastly in
creased.
The fctockmen of Morrow county
have a cood thing, and are wisely
increasing their land-holdings
while the prices of land are so
low. For soon the natural increase
in population will naturally in
crease land values.
The Heppner Hills country has
produced many millions of money
in live stock, and will produce
many millions more. The indus
try is in its infancy.
People who want to engage in a
very remunerative business should
come to Heppner and buy a stock

AT CLATSOP BEACH.
The popularity of Seaside as a
mer resort is enJ.nced bv the
improvements being made there for the
accommodation of visitors during the
ensuing season. More than a score of
new summer cottages are either com
pleted or in course of construction and
several more will be added before the
season opens.
Patrons of this resort, which has all
the natural advantages, will kail with
delight tbe addition of a modern water
and sewerage system, upon which ac
tive operations have benun and will be
completed in time to supply pure whole
some water from a nearby mountain
stream to all those who follow the throng
and appreciate the efforts of the pro
moters of a progressive summer resort.
Many people who formerly spent
eutings at other northwest beaches are
now and have been permanent patrons
of Clatsop beach ever since the compls-
tioa of the Astoria dt Columbia River
Railroad from Portland to Seaside.
During the summer season ,this com
pany has made rates and offered the
public a train service, which for cheap
ness and convenience could not be ap
proached by the rival transportation
lines. The raihoad has not yet an
nounced its rates and schedule for the
season which is about to open, but they
are preparing to handle larger crowds
than thev did last year: in view of this
fact' it is only fair to presume that they
will have some new advantages to
offer to seasiders.

Percy H. Levari came up from The
Dalles this week, where he has very sue
cessially presented a series of dramatic
performances with home talent.
Mr. Levin is an actor and manager of
well known ability, and under his di
rection will be preserved in Heppaer on
Friday, May 10, tbe bright, sparkling

The cast will be composed of the best
local talent in Heppner, and the per

At the Friday night meeting of Ruth
Chapte', No. 32, Eastern Star, a num
ber of new members were initiated.
The initiatory work of the lodge was
very impressive and lasted until a late

prepared in honor ot the new members.
