Heppner Raises Wool to Warm the World
Last year it shipped away 3,215,750 pounds, and
Morrow County shipped 200,000 bUBhels of
wheat. Morrow County's climate is most ex
cellent, and you can buy farms and ranches
here cheaper than anywhere else on earth or in
all Oregon. Population 6000.
Heppner has 1200 population, good school,
city water, electric lights and 135,000 brick hotel
the Palace. Portland Is located 197 miles from
Heppner. Chicago some further.

The Wild West party returned Mon
day from Ditch Creek, where they had
a most enjoyable time.
Mr, and Mrs. S. H. Simmons are
visiting Mrs. Simmons' parents, Sheriff
and Mrs. J. W. Matlock.

The fire started about a week ago.
Mrs. Julia Bradley, formerly of Hepp
ner, came over from Spray yesterday,
for a short visit among old friends.
Prices reduced on summer goods at
Mrs. L. J. Estes', 2d door south of post
office, Min street.
C. A. Rhea and family and the family
of VValdron Rhea went Tuesday to their
beautiful mountain camp at the head of
Ditch creek.
District Attorney T. G. Hailey was
over yesterday from Pendlt-ton, arrang
ing affairs in connection with the busi
ness of his office.

Jeff Evans, of the Lexington neigh
borhood, has been in the city the past
wtek suffering from a carbuncle in the
palm ot his left hand, which was lanced
by Dr. House.
T. R. Howard's store has everything
in the grocery line needed by city trade.
Hundreds of cords of wood are being
banked out at the saddle above the
ranch of Robert Watkins. In early fall
it will be hauled to Heppner.
Heppner's main street is now being
thoroughly wet down in the early morn
ing by Marshal George Thornton. He
uses the fire hose and makes a good job
of completely laying the dust.

Huckleberry bushes in the Morrow
county mountains seem to have con
cluded not to yield up very plentifully
this year, as their loads of fruit last
year broke off several of their main
imb.
T. A. Khea, S. W. Spencer and Herb
Bartholomew returned Monday evening
from Chiogo, where they bad taken

brother residing there.
J P McManus is in Heppner in the

New sidewalks are being laid nil over
Heppner.
The king of Italy was assassinated
last Sunday.
Hops are being contracted in Polk
county at 9 cents.
The Portland street carnival is going
to be a great success.

Dan Stalter has returned from the

a ledge of quartz that is very rich.

Deputy U. S. Marshal Al. Roberts
came up from Portland Monday tin lit
for a few days' visit with relatives and
friends in Heppner.
Al. Florence and family are camping
at Norman Kolley's ice-cold spring on
Harrison Hale prairie, and may extend
their trip on down to the breuks of the
John Day.
Clean newspapers to cover shelves,
put under carpets and line houses are
sometimes rcaice, but just now there is
a full supp y on sale at the Gazette
office at 15 cents a package.
Last week cunplaint was made against
J. Bordwell, of the Hardman neighbor
hood, charging him with rape. The
victim was Sadie (Jerking, about 12
years old. The preliminary was held
before Justice Williams and Boidwell
was bound over in tt.e sum of $500 to
appear at the November terra 1 court.

or day temperatures in Eastern Oregon
rnnged between 74 and 100 degrees, and

The mountains at the head of Ditch
creek echoed and re-echoed with vocal
and instrumental mvsic while the Wild
West party was camped there. Those
comprising the company were: Mrs.
J. D. B'own, Misses Pearl Wells, Anna
Smith, Liliau Andrews, Maggie and
Bertha Adkins, and W, L. Haling, Prof.
Howard, Bruce Kelly, Jake Wells, Ors
Adkins and Clyle Saiing.

Hon. Phil Metschan, in connection
with Mr. C. W. Knowles, has taken
charge of the Imperial Hotel, of Port
land. The reputation of these gentle
men insures the success of the enter

managed and is unsurpasned.
A. B. Cherry, Great Sachem of the
Reservation of Oregon, Improved Order
of Red Men, is up from Portland, and
will gather together this evening the
members of Seminole Tribe, who will
bold an enthusiastic meeting and go
forward with their good work.
Dr. E. R. Swinburne and Mrs. Hannah
Bartholomew, who were recently mar
ried in Heppner, are enjoying a wedding
trip through California.
Miss Ethel Walbridge, who is one of
the best teachers in the Morrow county
schools, will start Monday to finish tie
term at the Caldwell tirade.
FIRE FIEND FOILED.
That Heppner has a good fire depart
ment and a good water system was
again proven today.
At 1 P. M. Bock & Matthews' smoke
house caught fire. Dan Horner and
Marshal Thornton discovered it and
sounded an alarm, and in a jiffy the de
partment had two streams on the now
brightly-burning building.
The fire was instantly drowned -out.
-A brisk breeze Was stirring at the time,
and had near-by buildings caught, a
considerable conflagration would be
probable.

Are you going 10 the seaside ? If so,
remember that the steamer T. J. Potter,
the bnly through boat, leaves Portland
from Ash-street dock, every Tuesday
and Thursday, at 9 a. m., direct for
Ilwaco, making no stops en route, and
arriving at Ilwaco about 4 p. m., where
train is taken without delay for all
points on Long Beach. On Saturdays
the Potter, under a fast schedule, leaves
Portland at 1 p. m., enabling passeng
ers to reach hotels or cottages early
Saturday evening.
Steamer Hassalo, the popular night
boat, leaves Portland at 8 o'clock in the
evening daily, except Sui.day, and on
Saturday at 10 p. m., arriving at As
toiia early the following morning, con
necting with I. R. & N. boat for Ilwaco
and Long Beach points.
