    TOWN OF MITCHELL BUKNED.
Fred Walte Brings Word of a General Con
flagration at Tbat Place.
Kat Oregonian.
Fred Wsite oame home today from a
trip into Crook county, and brings word
of a serious fire at Mitobell, last Friday,
in whioo one-half the town was borned,
and the loss runs into several thousand
dollars. The fire started in an old barn,
where it is supposed some obildren were
playing with matohes. At first it was
feared that the fire was inoendiary, but
tbie impression has been removed.
Ten to twelye buildings were de
stroyed, of whioh four or five were
stores, one a hotel, one a livery stable
and some saloons.
The news was slow in ooming out.
Mitobell is about 120 miles from the
Columbia river, whioh is the nearest
railroad point, and iotelligenoe reaches
the outside world slowly.
A HAPPY COUPLE.
They Were Indians bat They Were Happy
as Lovers.
Once I saw a pretty thing, a young
bride, of the Kicfeapoos, on a sort of a
wedding trip. Sbe was tall and slight,
and so closely do the members of the
tribe rv.emble one another she looked
like the twin sister of her young bus
band. At first they were accompanied
hv a sinnt old chief, but be left after
oirous day. Tbe bride and bridegroom
spent three or four days in the town,
wandering about as unconsciously as
Adam and Eve in the garden. The
man was already masterful and proteO'
log, the girl shy and subservient. Day
after day tbey walked band io band,
looking at everything, people, shops,
osttle, but never speaking to any one,
never even to each other, yet deeply
content in the consiousness ot compan
ionship. Tbey were a living example of
tbe happiness of simplicity, and while
tbey stayed in the hustling town made
many a civilized man and woman think
of bow far their own oonduot as wives
and husbands fell short of tbe standard
of this uooonsoious Indian pair. East

Car of Race Horses
A oar load of race horses left tbe city
yesterday for Salem, Or., to gel in read
iness for events at the state fair in that
city in September. Matlook Bros, took
two runners down and Ed Qladsford
had three well known raoers in bis
oharge, namely: Baby Roth, owned by
Mr. H. A. Gardner, Birdie Williams,
property ot Sara Williams, and Juniper,
owned by Frank Smith. Buby Butb,
Mr. Gardner's little mare has never
been in better shape and it is expected
that she will come baok covered witb

A Portland View.
The editor of the Sycamore, Illinois,
Bepnblioan has this to say about a sight
that is so common to Portland people
that it Is generally unappreciated : "In
front and to the right across the river
and fertile Willamette valley are foot
hills aad mountains covered witb dense
pine and spruoe and fir, from the blaok
g reen of which with hardly a blemish of
its diizzling wbiteuess from base to sum
mit, standing cameo-like against tbe
deep blue sky, there rises up and up and
ever up, until, although 40 miles away,
II seems to overhang tbe city majestic,
graoeful Mount Hood, 12,000 feet above
tbe sea. To tbe left ot Ml. Mood is Mt.
Adams, 9,570 feet, further to the left and
in front of you is bountiful Mt. Ht.
Ilelens, 0,750 feet, both about 60 miles
distant; while partly behind tbe latter
mountain, is Mt. Tacoma, or, as the
geographies call it, Mt. Rainier, 14,441
feet high and 100 miles distant. All
these mountains are beautiful beyond
description, and the whole view from
Portland Heights is one tbat is never
effaced from the memory of one who has
seen it."
His Life Wat Saved.
Mr, J. E. Lilly, a prominent oitizen of
Hannibal, Mo,, lately bad a wonderful
deltveranoe from a frightful death. In
telling of it he says: "I was taken witb

The Rio Grande Western, tbe only line

has arranged to give holders of all
classes of tiokets a day stopover at Halt

THE BOI WHO WILL NEVER COME.
(Written by Kev. P. S. Knight.)
I hear a chorous of ringing bells
In echoing tower and dome.
And word is passed by a thousand tongues
That our boys are marching home.
But one mother watches the marching line
That steps to the rolling drum,
And covers her eyes and sheds hot tears
For a boy who will never come.
A father stands In an open Held
And leans on his resting plow,
With toil-worn hands and wrinkled face,
And grayhairs on his brow.
In silence he sees the column pass,
His quivering lips are dumb
But his heart responds with a broken sigh
For a boy who will never come,
Two little children, hand in hand,
Walk down the crowded street,
And scan each face in the line that steps.
To the Snare-drum's measured beat;
But they look in vain for a brother's face,
Whom they long to welcome home,
And two children's hearts are filled with grief
For a boy who will never come.
A maiden sits in a mourner's garb
In the shade of a darkened room,
And hears the music of martial bands
And the welcoming cannon's boom.
In truth she wishes her country well
Aa it welcomes its warriors home;
But her sad young heart beats a funeral dirge
For a boy who will never come.
0, 1 blame you not, ye who join the throng
That surges the crowed streets,
With welcoming hand and shout and song
The returning brave to greet.
But I am thinking of hearts that bleed
In many a sorrowing home.
And so weave my wreath of simple rhyme
For the boy who will never come.

Abandons Politics.
Maryellen Iase has abondoued polities The

WHEN PAW WAS A BOY.
X wish 'at I'd been here when
Vy paw he was a boy;
They must have been excitement then
When my paw was a boy;
In school he always took the prize,
He used to lick boys twice his size
I bet folks all had bulgin' eyes,
When my paw was a boy.
They was a lot of wonders done
When my paw was a boy;
How grandpa must of loved his son,
When my paw was a boy:
He'd git the coal and chop the wood,
And think up every way he could
To always jist be sweet and good
When my paw was a boy.
Then everything was in its place,
When ray paw was a boy ; .
How he could rassle, jump and race,
When my paw was a boy ;
He never, never disobeyed ; -He
beat In every game he played
Geel What a record they was made
When my paw was a boy.
I wisht 'at I'd boen here when
My paw he was a boy;
They'll never be his like agen

But still last night I heard my maw
Raise up her voice and call my paw
