Department of Agriculture Report of the Poisonous Plant. East Orcgonian David Casey bus reoeived from the de partment of Bgriealtare at Washington a report od the poisoDons plant be lent recently. V. K. Chestnut thai writes:. Washington, D. 0., Jane 15, 1899 Mr David Casey, Pendleton, Ore : Yoor letter of June 8, together with the accompanying specimens ia at band. Please aooept my thanks for yoor prompt co-operation. The plant is so-called "death camas," or "hog potato," Zygadenua yenenosos. There are several species which are olosely related, and all of these have tie reputation of being poiaonoos, the bulb being the part generally alluded to id reports. These bulbs sometimes get mixed up with the oamaa bulbs nsed so extensively for food by Indians through out California, Utah and the Northwest, and if vomiting is not loon induced the mess may prove fatal. There is no question in my mind that the bulbs are, in certain stages at least, also poisonous to some animals. I have no data to show that they are more dangerous at any one time than at an other, but yoor own observations are substantiated in part by Dr. 8. B. Nelson, of the Washington agricultural experi ment station, who last year published a paper, entitled Feeding Wild Plants to Sheep, in bulletin 22 of the bureau of animal industry of this department. Dr. Nelson did not state what part of the plant was used io this particular experi ment with the death camas, but plants ted from Mav 31 to June 2 caused no ill sffeot. As muoh as one pound was fed at one time, so the experiment if carried on with the bulbs is very instructive; if carried on with the herbs it does not mean anite so much. I should like to know particularly about this plant from yon. Is It me ouios orneros wdiod puwuu yourstook? V. K. Ciibsthut, Assistant. Kxnralou Kates.
