Hiram Tyree, superintendent of tbe public sobools of La Grande, Bends tbe Gazette tbe following important com munication in tbe interest of Eastern Oregon eduoation: La Grande, May 26, 1899. Eastern Oregon Teachhrs: A cor responding seoretary of tbe eastern divi sion of tbe State Teaobert' Association, I desire to call your attention to tbe meeting of tbe National Educational Asso ciation at Los Angeles, July 11-14, 1899. This is an oooasion tbat no teaober can afford to miss without making speoial effort to attend. Wbile tbe matter of expense will necessarily figure in tbe estimate of what one can afford, yet tbe importance of tbia great meeting is eo great tbat every teaober in Eastern Ore gon should make a special effort to attend. Tbis will be au opportunity of a lifetime, and will be tbe last chance some of as will have of attending tbis, tbe greatest educational gathering of tbe world. Tbe trip from Oregon into California will be like passing into a new world. Tbe instructions and tbe inspirations received by ooming in oon tact with the greatest eduoators of tbe United States, and the aoquaintanoes, associations and friendships formed will mark an epoob in the life of many a teacher. California will neoeesarily send tbe greatest delegation. Washing ton will send a host, both from tbe f ast ern and western divisions, Idaho and Montana promise a full attendance. And now, dear teaober, what about Oregon? What about Eastern Oregon? Shall we show to the world that we bave less in terest than aoy state west of the Mis sissippi? As you are aware, the state of Oregon has been organized into two divisions, tbe western and eastern divi eioni of the State Teaohers' Association. Tbe indications are tbat tbe western division will send n good representation. It is true that our expenses from East ern Oretton will be a little more than heir's, but it is not as much as from Eastern Washington, or Idaho, or Mon tana. The expense can be estimated as follows : Tbe O. II. A N. will sell round trip tickets to Portland for one and one- fifth fare. From Portland to Los Angules and return, by ocean steamer in both directions, or to Ban Franolsoo and return by steamer and from Kan Fran oisoo to Los Angeles by 8. P. R B., round trip of $35 is offered. Tbe South ern Pacific will make a rate of 835 for round trip from Portland, all overland route. Tiokets on eale July 5th to 9ib inoluaive. Oood hotel accommodations ran be secured in Los Angeles from SI to 9i per day. It will thus be seen that the expenses can be kept very low. 1 have been asked to make report, at the earliest possible date, of those in tending to take advantage of these rates. You will therefore confer a favor by in forming at your earliest possible con venience, of your intention to attend. Those who desire to establish an' East ern Oregon headquarters at tbe National Educational Association please state tbe same in your replies. Very truly yours, IIibam Tviikk, Corresponding Heo'y.
