whereby A. B. Hammond and wile transfer to

Astoria and Clatsop county. The consideration
named is only ISO, but revenue stamps were
attached to cover a transfer of J 15,000.
Salmon have been running fairly well up to
the present, and fishermen are doing as well as
could be expected at this season of the year,
says tbe Astorian, Compared with other years,
it is said the catch is fully up to, if not ahead
of, previous seasons. The fish so far in the
river are small and cannot be taken in large
mesh nets. The fishermen, owing to these nets,
are doing but little, and many of them have ar
ranged to knit small mesh nets as soon as pos
sible. The salmon now being taken weigh be
tween 15 and 18 pounds. , ,
C. T. Williams, who has been a recent resi
dent of Walla Walla county for over a year,
having come from Grant county, received a let
ter Tuesday that gave Mm the blues, says the
Walla Walla Union. Tbe letter stated that out
of 120 head of cattle belonging to him in Grant
county only nine head had survived the winter,
and out of 60 head of horses only nine are liv

such loss as tnat reported to Mr. Williams, and
while it does not doubt the report, had such a

looking for a site to erect a brewery and were
favorably impressed with Long Creek and will
likely return and establish such an enterprise
at this point. Mr. Fitch is a well-to-do resi

among the best brewers on the Pacific coast,
and should they decide to locate in Long Creek,

npon. Dong Belts, the Birch creek sheep man-expressed-
himself upon the subject to a Repub
lican reporter on last Thursday. He takes the
position that the bill will be of much more
benefit from a pecuniary standpoint than it
will an expense to the taxpayers. He was fav
orable to the passage of the bill during the
time it was pending In the legislature and so
expressed himself at that time. He said further
that he would have been pleased had the price
paid for a scalp been three dollars instead of
two. It will be a saving of thousands of dollars
to those owning sheep, as the amount offered
for a scalp Is sufficient incentive to many to
make an effort to kill the varmints. Pendleton
