ABOUT LUCK AT THE RACKS.
Pari to Have 'an' Electric, Sratan
That I Robbed of Maay Dugtn.
The electric trolley system to be In
troduced In Paris In time for the inter
national exposition of 1900 is vastly dif
ferent from that commonly employed
in the United States, inasmuch aa the
dangerous overhead wires are absolute
ly done away with. The new system,
says the Philadelphia Record, is the in
vention of the French engineer Bochet,
and, while rather simple, it steers clear
of the objection on account of unsight
ly obstruction, which is usually raised
when , overhead wires have to go Up.

How the Experts Were R. aten by the Super
stitions Man.
Iast Monday a party of New Orleans business
men from one of the up-town office building
went out to see the races, says the New Orleans
Times-Democrat. With one exception they all
knew more or less about "form" and "handf.
capping," and the trip to the grounds was en
livened by an animated discussion on the rela
tive merits of the llyers. The exception was a
quiet gentleman, who frankly admitted that he
was totally ignorant of turf matters and knew
no more of the intricacies of bookbetting than a
Hottentot knows of pink peas. His friends re
ceived this confession with rather scornful sym
pathy and advised him not to monkey with the
pool box. When they reached the grounds they
found the second race about to be run, and
while Lygia was the favorite, a hot tip had gone
around on Miss Maytlmc, ridden by O'Connor.
The wise men In the party consulted their form
cards, did a little swift figuring on the handi
cap, and concluded that the tip was reliable.
'She can't lose unless she gets struck by light,
nlng," declared the chief astrologer of the
crowd, and they proceeded to Invest in Miss
Waytlme at odds of 15 to 1. While tho paste
boards were being written the quiet man who
knew nothing about racing fished out a $5 bill
and modestly placed It on Elmer 8,, a gaunt
white nag that was on the boards at 20 to 1. His
friends laughed merrily at the time, and when
the race was called they fairly yelled, for El
mer 8., Instead of getting oil' with the others,
turned around and ran away.
"Now you see," said one of the experts, "how
foolish It is to bet your money on mere
caprices. No man has any business around the
pool box unless he possesses some accurate,
scientific knowledge of the game." While he
was talking the starter caught Elmer 8. by the
bridle, yanked Mm 'tother end to and sent him
olf behind the bunch. Then a miracle hap
poned. The itaunt, white horse, distanced, dis
counted, .discretlded and hooted at by every
body on tho track, suddenly laid back his ears,
covered the gap like a bolt from a catapult, and
won the race hands down. Mynsotis, a 40 to 1
hot, was second and poor Miss Maytime may
be running vet-at least sho was somewhere at
the wlndup. After the crowd caught Its breth
there was a grand howl of amazement mid the
wise men looked foolish. The quiet man
walked over and exchanged his ticket for $100
In nice crisp bills and came back smiling softly
On the way to town one of his friends spoke up,
"Bay, old mail," he said, "how the dickens was
it that you happened to bet on that white
skate?" "Well, I'll tell you, replied the quiet
man. "I'll admit you fellows know a lot more
about racing than I do, but I keep my eyes
open, and just as we were going Into the
grounds I saw a red-headed woman " "Thun
der and lightning I" groaned the scientific
player, and tore up his form card.

length of the electric train, con

that contact is always assured at
one point at least. Through flex
ible points of contact suspended from
each electric light post along the pro
posed line the current will be taken up
by means of a copper rail fastened
along the edge of the roof of the car
hot less than 14 or 15 feet from the
ground. The contact point will slide
along that copper rail, and there is not
the slightest difficulty in establishing
a continuous current if the points of
contact are made sufficiently elastio.
The current is allowed to return to the
power station through the track of the j
line, as usual. This system oners all
the benefits of the overhead, as well as
of the underground systems, without
any of their shortcomings.

cry. "Down the well," replied Tommy.

BELL WEIGHING 08 TONS.
Ovsr Twelve Feet High ad Raised In
That It Mar Ue Rang,
For some time past there has been a
sort of duadheat between the two big
gest bells in the world-, the one at the
catehdral in Moscow and the other in
the unfinished pagoda of Mengoon, a
little north of Mandalay, across the
river. If the former was the bigger of
the two, says the New York Journal,
is was cracked, and, therefore, useless
as a bell, while the latter, though
whole, had dragged its supports down
till it rested on. the ground., and would
not emit any sound. Now, however, it
hns been reswung, and can claim at.
tcntion us the biggest bell, in working
order, in the world. It averages over
u foot in thickness. The bell itself is
over 12 feet high, and the shackle, which
was intended for logs of timber, about
12 feet. The pin in the shackle has a
diameter of 16 inches. The bell was
cast about the beginning of the cen
tury by King Hodaw-paya as an ac
companiment to the huge brick padoga
Which he never finished. It is said to
have been cast on an island and rafted
across. No proper means yet exist for
striking the bell, but when hit with a
heavy piece of wood it gives a deep, vi
brating boom.
Ancient Thermopylae.
An officer of the English intelligence
department reports that in spite of the
fact, which is well known, that the sea
has receded since ancient times, the
strategical position of this ancient pass
is est ill immensely strong. The alter
native route by Dcleghi, which crosses
he: hills V.t miles north of the springs
by well-engineered zigzags, is equally
unable of defense, and leads into a
ountry of a most difficult character.
Kithcr pnss might be held indefinitely
by 5.(100 men. The const road is ab
solutely commanded from the heights
so that a comparatively small force
would render it impassable, while the
Hat lowland lying near the sea is
marshy and intersected by dykes.

Imagine a prettier picture than that of a
young girl, with lips luscious with the
promise of love, half parted in the smiles
of happy dreamland. The mind of happy
maidenhood is n clear and polished mirror,
which, when the wits go wandering into the
KhosUiuid of drettins, reflects the impres
sions of waking hours. If those impres
sions are plt-itsaut and painless and happy,
she will smile in her sleep. If the impres
sions are those of a sutlering woman, tor
tured with the special ailments to which
the feminine organism is liable, the picture
is spoiled by the lines of suffering and de
spondency. Maladies of this nature unfit a
woman for joyous maidenhood and for ca
pable motherhood. They incapacitate her
to bear the burdens of life in any sphere
of action. Household, marital and social
duties alike are a burden to the woman who
is constantly sutleiiug from hrsduches,
biukaelit-s, dragging sensations and weak
ening drains. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Pre.
sctiptiou p.itively, completely, unfail
ingly cures trouble of this nature. It
impart heullh, strength, vigor to the dis
tinctly womanly organs. It fits for care
free, healthy maidenhood, happy wifehood
anil capable motherhood.
