A telegram from Portland eaya that a Spanish man-of-war has
arrived at Jamaica, and reports that twelve American fighting ships
are gaardiog the entrance to the harbor of Santiago de Cuba, but that
Cervera bas been gone some days.
. Tbe report that the Baltimore was sauk in Manila harbor is a
mistake.
Telegraphic news is expected this afternoon. .

HONG KONG, May 28. The foreign residents of tbe Philippines
have petitioned to be allowed to move to Oavite. Gen. AguiDaldo, t
insurgent leader is preparing to attack Manila with 37,000 meu. Food
is scarce at Manila. Capt. Gridley, of the battleship Olvmpia. has
been sent home on account of sickness. .
. Commander Lambertson now commands the Olympia. Montejo
has not been sentenced to deatb.
KINGSTON, Jamanica, May 28. It is reliably reported here that
12 American warships are off Santiago. Cervera is inside.

bureau, through the Portland Tribune.)
KEY WEST, May 28. It is reported that the Marblehead de
stroyed the forts on the south side of Cienf uegos Bay, after a hot en
gagement. Many Spaniards are supposed to have been killed. No
Americans hurt
KEY; WEST, May 28. A dispctoh from Cienfuegos says the
British steamer, Adulab, has been released.
WASHINGTON, May 28. Gen. MileB formally reported to the
president tnis morning that the army numbering 160,000 men is ready
to move on Cuba, ; Porto Rioo and the Philippines, and says he can
put 80,000 men aboard transports inside of twenty-hours.
War with Austria is now a probability. The Austrian minister
will certainly be given his passports and our Vienna minister will be
recalled.' The state department has positive evidence that the Aus
trian minister is acting as a Spanish spy.
NEW YORK, May 28. The U. a auxiliary cruiser, Zafiro, has
arrived at Hong Koug with dispatches from Dewey. The situation is
unchanged. . ,
SAN ' FKANCI8CO, May 28,-The firBt regiment Montana
volunteers arrived here today,
' KEY WEST, May 29 In the Cienfuegos fight 200 Spaniards
were killed and a large quanity of. ammunition was safely landed for
the Cubans. The Marblehead . silenced the guns of the Spaniards in
just ten minutes, and then the insurgents drove them out The Cubans
are rBgged but game to the backbone. . ' .
WASHINGTON, May 29. Dewey, is preparing to take the Caro-
me islands, a dependency, of Spain. The Spanish are persecuting
American missionaries.
A Vienna dispatch says that tbe Spaniards are much scared over
the visit of Goshen, tbe head of the British admiralty to Gibraltar.
WASHINGTON, May 29. Schley secoud dispatch says positively
that Cervera is at Santiago. Tbe president today told a senator that
he did not think the army was ready for the invasion of Cuba. .
KINGSTON, Jamaica, May 29.-Capt Cotton, of the nrvard, says
as far as he knows Cervera is at Santiago, and up to noon yesterday
there had been no casualties among the Americana. The American
ships off Santiago are the Iowa, Texas, Marblehead, Indiana, Brooklyn,
Massachusetts, Vixen, St Paul, Minneapolis and Yale.
NEW YORK, May 29. A dispatch from Key West says that
Sampson is between Key West and Havana, and may remain there
during the preparations for the invasion of Cuba.
WA8UINGTON, May 29. An important cable has been received
rom Schley this afternoon and it is now being translated. Secretary
Long says that he hopes to make the contents public

at San Juan, Porto Rioo.
KEY WEST, May 30. The Bpanish steamer, Restoroiel, was
brought in this morning, having been caught while trying to put into
Santiago de Cuba with coal.

fleet is bottled up in the harbor of Santiago de Cuba,

reason now why our army should Lot invade Cuba at once.
NEW YORK, May 3l.-Indiontious are that the U. a will move
to the I'hilipinpa permanently. A cable will be laid from Ban Fran
cisco by way of Honolulu to Manila. Twenty thousand soldiers will
be sent to Manila. Dewey is fortifying Manila harbor.
