The following letter baa be n handed
the Gazette with permission to pub
lish: DTEA. ALASKA, April 27, 1898.
Dr. E. R. Swiobnrne,
Beppner, Ore.
Dear Sir: I came down on business
yesterday and find affairs very qniel
here. It seems that the travel baa
stopped altogether. Of oooise there is
no telling what the fntare might bring.
Certain it ia that the interior is all right,
bat it tekea money, energy and con
siderable tenaoity to get there and stay
there. I have several good prospects in
view and intend to bay some "govern
ment relief expedition" provisions and
have tbem shipped atraight to Dawaon
Oity before they get the thoasaoda of
tons of provisions over the St. Michael
roots. The lakes will break in two o r
three weeks, and I have made arrange
ments with a party to take my goods in
their boats the minute travel by water
is open. I will also try to take in some
green fruit and eggs. I oan manage to
have the fruit and eggs taken off the
boats at Dyeajast two days before the
noat at tne lakes will be ready to go
down the river, and if the tramway and
everything works as expected I have no
doubt that my venture will snooeed. I
still have a store in Sheep Camp. Have
done exceedingly well tbere, and am
also interested in a male and burro
train. I have a half interest in a restau
rant at Lindeman. It things no well 1
shall soon have enough money to throw
to the birds. The tramway from the
o say on to the summit works fine, but I
am afraid it will knook oat packers and
pscktrains.
I would like to write more but I have
time nor patienoe at the present
dootor. TtJia part of tne world has, no
doubt, been the most interesting sight
imaginable and I will never regret bay
ing seen all, even sboald I oome out
loser in the end , wbiob, from present
indications, oannot be the oase.
My health is first class. Abe Jones is
at Sheep Camp. Cbas. Jones is in Dyea
tie id ten da to go in before long. I saw
number of Oregon boys and quite a
tew Heppnerites. They all managed to
keep in good health and spirits. Muir,
Eosley and two others whose names I
don t reooiiect just now, nave gone over
to the lakes, and none suffered from th
snow-slide. My store was the Eastern
Oregon boys' headquarters and I kept
well informed of their whereabouts. At
the present Dyea as well as Sheep Camp
ia getting very quiet, but I think the
next rash will revive this trail. Ton
can depend on it that Ibis is the only
feasible trail. I will send yoa some
views of the trail. It's a beautiful
ight.
I send thia letter and the picture with
C. Forbes, the druggist. I am doing
business with bim. He is going to
Portland in a day or two. Jerry Gobn
ia here with Stokes Bros. Frank Mil oh
eli want me to aend hi regards to Mr
Brock and family and other friends.
