Onit, Teaober, The Statu of Koyal Minor lit the Old World. It is an interesting circumstance thai no fewer than three European throne axe occupied by children. Since tht abdication of King1 Milan, his sod Alexander, who was born in August, 1876, and is now, consequently, fourteen years old, has been the titular ruler of Servia, though the country is really governed by a board of regents. The present King of Spain, Alfonso XIIL, is an infant, and during his minority the normal head of the monarchy will be his mother, the Queen-Regent Christina. By the death of King William III. the crown of Holland de volves on his daughter, Wilhelmma, who is in her eleventh year. Here again, the child's mother, Queen Emma, is temporarily invested with the royal functions. What likelihood, asks the New York Ledger, is there that these children will ever rule in their own names? The young King of Servia has evidently the poorest chance oi reigning'. 1 lie quarrel between his fattier and liis mother, the ex-Queen Nathalie, has divided his parti sans, while the pro-Ilussian party, now dominant m Servia, aims to displace the Obrenovitch dynasty to which King Milan and his son belong, and substi tute the pretender Karageorgevitch. As to the infant King of Spain, his sub jects havo been hitherto withheld from revolutionary outbreaks by a certain sentiment of chivalry. But as the sov ereign grows older, this feeling will disappear, and it will prove extremely difficult for his supporters to make head against the Spanish Republicans on the one hand and the Carlists on the other. The close approach to universal suf frage which has recently been made in Spain must greatly strengthen the pop ular leaders who regard a monarchical system with contempt and detestation. The girl-Queen of Holland has the best chance of retaining her position, but her hour of trouble will come when her marriage is discussed. Her mother, who is a German, will naturally wish aer to marry a German Prince; but such project is certain to be resisted by Russia and France, nor Is it likely to be viewed with favor by the Hollanders, who dread absorption in the German Empire. On tho whole, there is some thing pathetic in the situation oi these ihild sovereigns. LCNG TROUBLES AND CONSCMiTION CAN HE CURED. SET THE CHILDREN TO WORK. An Ingenious Englishman Who Combined a Swing and a Much Needed Pump. An English writer on inventive geniuses tells a story of a certain August Pirch, who is the possessor of a dozen fine healthy children. Mr. Pirch; so the story goes, had a tract of land that could not be used for tho want of water, since it was far from any available stream or other body which might prove of use in the fertilization of his acres, and how to irrigate tho land without spending a large sum of money was a mystery whicrfor a long time Mr. Pirch could not solve. Ho figured out the cost of a well, and found that his rcnources would permit of his digging a sixty-foot well and the purchase of a cheap pump, but how to make the pump work was a question. Suddenly his inventive mind suggested a solution. Ho remembered his children and ho nlso called to mind a certain ltire family swing he had teen in a nclhborim' town. He knew the swing would pkwo the children, and he hoped through it thoir pleasure might bo able to serve his interests. The well was bored, the pump was set up and tho awing was put in working order. "Here, now, boys," said he, when all was ready, calling the children to him, "come out here and get in thia awing. I'm going to give you something to play with." Ia five minute the children were fly ing backward and forward through the air. The pump worked up and down gayly as you pious and a fourteen-inch stream of water Unwed from the welL Mr. Plrvha at homo had worked. The children do rrot know they are working, as the awing is some dUtance from the well and ia connected with it by an iron rod which works tho pump as the swing moves backward and forward. The scheme has worked well, and it ia said that the Joiinghtcrs pump enough water during their dny's sport to irrigate a large tract Ilarper'a Young People.
