PRESS COMMENT.
There are many reasons wby it would
be wise for tbe republioana of tbe aeoond
congressional district to return Mr. W.
R. Elba. Id the first plaoe, be baa been
in oongress long enough to have gained
a large personal aoqaaiotnnoe with his
fellow congressmen as well as an exten
sive knowledge ot tbe workings of that
brunch ot our national legislature. This
gives him an advantage that no new
member oun noqnire in one term. His
continuation in offioe will also give him
an influence on oomraittees that newly
elected members oannotozpeot. Iu faot,
Mr. Ellia is now a member of two im
portant committors, that is, important
to Oregon, viz: "Irricatiou of Arid
Lands," of which be ia chairman, and
Public Lands." Mr. Elba ia also put
ting forth hia best efforts, in oonjnnction
with other members from the Pacific
coast, to secure the Nicaragua oatal.
In many eastern states the people
recognize tbe advisability of retaining
their congressmen to secure tbe advan
tages that aoorue from continued eervioe
in that oapaoity. Two notable examples
of this are Congressman Dinvlnv. nf
Maine, and Congressman Hitt, of Illi
nois. The former is chairman of the
Waya sod Means committee and author
of our preaent tariff law, white tbe latter
ia ohairman of the oommitteeon Foreign
Affairs. Both of these men have served
their states in this oapaoity sinoe the
opening of the forty-seventh oongreaa.
Mr. Ellis has served bis constituents
faithfully and well duriug tbe past six
yeara, belongs to no ollqne or faolion,
but stauds squarely on the 8t. Louis
platform aa his aols in oongress will tes
tify and will be able to do more for Ore
gon in tbe next two years than any new
man that might be eleoted. Uuion Re
