Portland, giving four each week. Here
after the oar lerving Monday will run
through without ohaoge to Kansas City
and Chicago, over the O. R. & N., Ore
gon Short Line, Rio Grande Western,
Denver Sc Rio Grande, Missouri Paoiflc
and Chicago & Alton. That car has just
been arranged for, and tbe one previous
ly scheduled for Monday baa been
ohiiuged to Thursday. It rnns through

line. The oar leaving Portland Tuesday
goes through to Boston, and is promoted
by tbs Chicago, Rock Island and Paoido.

Alex MoAlpio, one of the workmen io
the Elk creek placer mines suffered a
seriously wounded eye last week, caused
by a piece of rook flying while be was
working on bedrock. His eyeball was
laoerated. but it is thought ha will not
lose the sight of the injured member.
Drs. Vaugban and Greenlee arrived in
the city last Friday from Heppner, and
pened up their dental parlor at the
Monumental hotel. Dr. Greenlee de-
Darted for Canyon City yesterday. Dr.
Vaughao not being able to go on ac
count of being a victim of that popular
complaint, la grippe.
J. D. Shipp, a resident ot the Middle
Fork country, while splitting wood last
Friday by holding the wood in hw left
band and the ax in the other! severed
the index finger ot the left hand close to
his kouokle. As soon ss the aooident
oocurred the injured member was bound
up in the best possible manner, and in
company with George MoPberson, Mr.
Hhipp rode to this city, a distance of
twenty miles, for treatment. Dr. Mira
cle completed the amputation and took
out the irjored kouokle joint. Mr.
obipp has reoovered from the shock of
the surgioal operation and is rapidly re
covering from the accident.
Ennis Ingraham bave let pole con
tracts from here to Burns, and will bave
their telephone line in operation on or
before the 1st of July.
Cbas. Richardson, while on the trail
between bere and Cox creek, one dav
lately, shot an old oougar and two
younger ones and secured their scalps
as trophies. Tbe largest of the animals
measured Dine feet from tip to tip.
J. H. Clark, tbe Walla Walla mining
man, has looated tbe rioh copper ledge
up Sheep gulob about six miles from
town, and Walla Walla capitalists will
probably assiBt in its development. Mr.
Clark will blast off a hundred Donnd
pecimen of the ledge and send it out to
tbe railroad to be placed on exhibition.

An Oyster In a ripe.
A curiosity from the oyster beds was
&hown in New York several days ago.
Henry Davis, a Rock Ilill oysterman,
while tanging on Huntinpfield, caught
perfect young oyster, 2x2'2 inches,
which had grown in the mouth of an old
clay pipe. The oyster was so tightly
wedged in thebowl as, to render it im
possible of removal without breaking
the pipe.

Big Sheep Deal Completed by Marshall &
Furnish Buying Horses For Alaska,
One of the largest transactions in
sheep that ever occurred in Umatilla
oonsty has just been negotiated between
Marshall & Furnish, extensive Umatilla
oounty sheep-raisers, and Frank Lacy,
a buyer from tbe east.
Nineteen hundred bead, principally
yearling ewes and wethers are em
braced lu the deal. The sheep are
scattered in different bands ell over tbe
oountry, and will be delivered at Mar
shall & Furnish's Combs' canyon ranch,
15 miles south-west of Pendleton, about
tbe middle of May, after shearing. Tbe
terms are private, but it is understood
that tbe prioe was in tbe neighborhood
of $2.50 per bead.

drive to be started this spring by Mr.
Lacy tor tbe eastern markets.
