parted yesterday morning by team tor
the interior couDtry to begin the work ot
extending the line of the Blue Moun
tain Telephone Co. ot Heppner from
Canyon City, the present terminous, on
to burns in Harney county. Tbe gentle
men will be absent looking after this
work for five or six months and will not
return to Heppner before tbe middle of
Angust or first of September. The en
terprise shown by our telephone oom
pany in making this important extension
very commendable and tbe Gazette
hopes it may prove to be a very success
ful business venture. Tbe people of
Burns are very anxious for tbe line to be
built and will give the move substantial
aid.

Bchool Honse Burned.
The school bouse situated near Robt.
Dexter's plaoe, was entirely destroyed
by fire Saturday last. Tbere had been
a populist meeting oalled for that day,
and Uncle Billy Gilliam, Robt. Dexter
and one other whose name we did' not
learn, were the only ones who responded
to the call. It being rather cold, tbey
built a fire in the stove, which was, from
what we learn, rather antiquated, and
when tbey departed it ia supposed they
left considerable fire in tbe stove, whicb
either by coals dropping on the floor, or
in some othey way unknown, set fire to
the building. This is a severe less to
ths distriot and will no doubt cause a
late sobool there this spring. Tbe loss
is placed at 8300.
