On of America' Greatest Women Passe
Away.
New York, Feb. 18. Mies Franoea E.
Willard, president cl tbe Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, died short
ly after midnight this morning, at the
Hotel Empire, this oity. At tbe bedside
of Miss Willard at tbe time of her death
were her niece, Mrs. W. W. Baldwin ;
Mrs. L. M. Stevene, vioe-preeident of
the W. O. T. U.j Miss Anna M. Gordon,
Mies Willard 's seoretary, and Dr. K. Hill.
Miss Willard had been ill for three
weeks. Dr. Hill made tbe following re
port: "Miss Willard has suffered for some
years from anaemia, and on several oc
casions has been given up to die. Last
summer she seemed to take on a Dew
lease of life, and gained in weight and
strength, so that she went through her
convention work at Toronto and Buffalo,
wbiob waa most arduous, and cams out
muob better than was expected, but on
her arrival bere five weeks ago, she was
muob. prostrated, and readily took tbe
grippe, wbiob attaoked the stomach,
liver, Intestines and later tbe nervous
system. Tbe disease progressed favor
ably, and in many respeots she bad con
siderably improved when the fatal issue
came and overwhelmed tbe nerve oen-
ters. Tbere was no caooerous attack of
any organ, as has been staled."
Tbere will be funeral eervioes in New
York oily, and later in Evanston, III.,
Miss Willard 's borne, where tbe body
will be taken.
(Miss Frances E. Willard, founder and
for four years president of tbe World's
Woman'a Christian Temperanoe Uoion,
and president of the National Woman'a
Christian Temperanoe Union 12 years,
was bom Sept. 28, 1839, at Cburohville,
N. Y. She was a graduate of the North.
western university, Obioago. She took
tbe degree of A. M. from Syracuse uni
versity. In 18C2 sbe was professor of
natural ecienoe at the Northwestern
female college, Evanston, 111. In I860-
1867 she was preceptress of the Genesee
Wesley an seminary, Lima, N. Y.,' and in
1868-1870 sbe traveled abroad, studying
French, German, Italian and the history
of floe arts, visited nearly every Euro
pean oapital, snd went to Grceee, Egypt
and Paleetine. In 1871 she was presi
dent of tbe woman'a college of North
western nnivereity, and professor of
aesthetics; sbe was elected correspond
ing seoretary of the N. W.C. T.U.in
171, and 1877 was assooiated with I). L.
Moody in revival work in Boston. Sbe
became president of tbe Illinois W. 0. T.
U. and editor of tba Chicago Daily Post
in 1878, and in 1879 waa chosen presi
dent of the National Woman's Cbnstisn
Temparsnoe Union, which position sbe
baa ainca beld. Miss Willard waa an
author of mueb distinction, and wrote a
number of books.)

passenger rates, and tbey will go into
effect today. It announced yesterday
a rate of $40 first and $30 second class
from Atlantio ooaat points to Vaucouver.

From St. Paul and Missouri river
points to tbe Northwest, $26 first olass;

From Chioago to the Northwest. $31 50

These are tremendous reduotions, and
tbey will apply on all roads Ieadioe
to tbe Northwest terminals, Portland,
Taooma, Seattle and Everett.
The rates will be east-bound as well as
west-bound. Tbia morning all tloket
offioes of tbe Northern roads will offer
these rates to the Missouri river points.

Fnneral of J. V. Steeve.
J . Venner Steeves, who died in Port
land Feb. 16, waa buried Saturday. Tbe
funeral waa conducted by Rev. 0. B.
Howard at tbe residence of Mrs. S. Til
lard, Mr. Steeves bad been a sufferer
from a complication of diseases for sev
eral yeara whioh finally culminated in
consumption. Ha was for yeara an em
ploye of the O. R. k N. Co. at Umatilla,
being master meohanic in the shops
tbere when sickness oompelled him to
abandon work and try to regain his
health. Ha visited California last sea
ion, thinking that climate might benefit
bim, but the grim destroysr bad too firm
a bold upon bim. He waa a obarter
member of Pendleton lodge B, P. O. E.,
No 188, and atood bigb in the estimation
of all who knew bim. He was a brother,
in-law of tbe Tillards, and leavea a wife
and one child to mourn bis loss. The
Gazette extenda its sympathy to tbe
afflicted in tbia their bour of trouble.
