THE WOOL RECORD
Telia You How to Do It.
A Washington Sheepman Hakes a Good Bale
of Scoured Wool at Pendleton.
From the E. O.
John McGregor, who shipped bis wool
down to the scouring mill at Pendleton,
where he held it in storage, visited this
city Thursday, and closed the sale of bis
scoured wool to Allen & Lewis, of Ban
Franoieco, at 47 oents per pound. This
netted bim about the highest price ob
tained for any heavy wools shipped to
Pendleton this season.
Mr. McGregor is a large sheepowner
Eastern Washington, mooing be
tween twelve and fifteen thousand bead.
He expresses himself as so well pleased
with the result of bia experiment at
Pendleton's scouring mill that be will
hereafter do his business in this city.
He baa been able to offer bis wool for.
sale in different markets, east and west,
by means of samples, and has thus ob
tained the advantage of competitive bid
ing.
The price realized by Mr. MoGregor
for bis wool in the grease was over nine
cents per ponnd, wbioh considering the
faot that it belonged to a olasa of ex-
eptionally heavy Washington wools is a
very gratifying figure.

following essay on the subject
"Viktcb Its Own Rkward."
"Once there was a poor man who was
love with a rioh young girl whose
mother kept a large candy store. The
young man wanted to marry the candy
lady's daughter very badly and she
wanted to marry bim, but be waa too
poor to buy furniture. One day a bad
man came to bim and offered bim twenty
five dollars to become a drunkard. The
poor young man was dreadfully tempted
because be wanted to be rioh enough to
marry the oandy store lady's beautiful
daughter. But when he got to the sa
loon door with the bad man be eaid, "
will not break my pledge, even to be
rich. 'Get tbee behind me Satan.'"
So be went borne, and on bia way be
found a pocket book with one million
dollars in gold in it. So be went and
told tbs osndy store keeper's daughter
and they were married. Tbey bad a
lovely wedding and the next week they
bad twins. Thus we see that virtue is
its own reward."

Thev had been married lees than a
year when ehe noticed that her husband
stayed oat late at nights and when, he
did come home was apt to be noisy ana
demonstrative, says the Detroit Free
Press. On his part William observed
that he could never find a knife to cut
a bite to eat, and that even the family
shears were out of reach, while bis raz
ors at fiuch times were locked up and
the key hidden.
He did not eay much, because he was
not in a condition to talk, and when be
waa sober he did cot care to refer to the
past.
But he gTew worse instead oi better,
and one night bo went home at a late
hour and found the ball brilliantly
lighted and on the table under the gas
an assortment of all the cutlery in the
house. Knives, scissors and razors al
luringly open met his unsteady gaze.
"M-M-Marv." ho called, "w-w-wnat
d-does tthis mean?"
"It means," sbe answered, from the
top of the staircase, "that ever since
you've been cutting up in this manner
I've been afraid you would do as you
threatened to do kill yourself with
some of those things." '
"Y-y-yes, MaTy."
"Now I'm beginning to be more
afraid that you won't, so I thought I'd
give you every possible chance."
There was a sound of cutlery by
night, mingled with forcible though
unsteady words, and William has re
mained at homo every evening up to
date.

CHEERFUL PROSPECT.
What Young Minister Had to Inspire
Pleasant Thoughts.
A nervous young minister, in visiting
a neighboring village, had an unpleas
ant experience. The old lady at whose
house be stayed, in showing him to his
room, said:
"It ain't anybody I'd put in this room.
This here room is full of sacred associa
tions to me," she went on. "My first
husband died in that bed with his head
on these pillows, and poor Mr. Jenks
died sitting in that corner. Sometimes
when I come into the room in the dark
I think I see him sitting there still. My
own father died layin' right on that
lountre ricbt under the window there.
Poor pa, he was a spiritualist, and he
alius said he'd appear in this room after
be died, and sometimes I am foolish
enough to look for hini. If you should
see anything of him to-night you o
better not tell me. It'd be a sign to me
that there was something in spiritual
ism, and I'd hate to think that. My son
bv mv first man fell dead of heart dis
ease right where you stand. He was a
doctor, and there's two whole skele
tons in that closet there belonged to
him, and half a dozen skulls in that
lower drawer. If you are up early and
want aoniething to amuee yourself
with before breakfast just opeu that
cupboard there and you will find a lot
of dead tnen'a bones. My poor boy
thought a lot of them. Well, good
night, and pleasant nrenms.
