pal oourt room Friday in the presenta
tion to Police Judge Sweek of an elegant
gold watch.
The presentation speech was made by
City Attorney Cake, who on behalf ot
the lawyers of Portland, the attaches of
the municipal oourt and the members ot
the polioe department tendered to
Judge Sweek the watoh, stating it to be
testimonial of the regard and esteem
in which bis honor was held.
Judge Sweek was plainly unprepared
for the presentation but in an extempore
response, thanked the attorneys and
municipal offioers present, for the
courtesy and assistance he has received
at their bands sinoe his oocupanoy of

The Overman Wheel Company, of
Cbicopee Falls, Mass., made an assign
ment on Monday for the benefit of its
oreditors. Henry B. Bowman, presi
dent of the Springfield National bank,
was appointed trustee. Albert H. Over
man is president of the oompany, and
the prinoipal owner, and he gave out a
statement showing that, on November
10 last, the assets were $1,318,000 and
the liabilites $539,000. The liabilities
held principally io Boston. Mr. Over
man furnished 810,000 to pay off the em
Dloyes. and the factory was closed. One
week's pay is still due to the employes,

est seizure of contraband liquor ever
made in Alaska. The seizure oonsisted

at Juneau, Skagway and Dyea. The
liquor was packed in various kinds of
packages for the purpose of deoeiving
the customs officers. Many ot the pack
ages were shipped ae "baking powder,"
"kerosene," "turpentine" and other de
vices to get the liquor past tbe custom
officials. Tbe liquor wbioh repreoents
more than 810,000 in value was
turned over to Colleotor of Customs T.
J. Black, ot Portland, by Colleotor Ivey.
