Too Heroism ot a Miller In
Little GlrL
The brave work of amillermsavinga
little girl from drowning is described
by the Indianapolis Journal. The mill
owner and his wife, it appears, had gone
to the city, leaving au eight-year-old
girl at home. With other children she
went down to the mill to play, and by
some accident fell into the sluice which
feeds the turbine wheel.
The head miller heard a scream, and
not knowing what had happened, ap
plied a brake and stopped the machin
ery. Then he ran out, found the little
girl just disappearing under the water,
and in he went after her.
Then he found himself in a hard
place. The water was eight feet deep,
and he was four feet below the top of
Ihe sluice, the 6idea of which were aa
Smooth as a polished floor. The girl
was unconscious. How was he to get
her out?
It took one hand to hold her head
above water, and the other to keep him
self from sinking. He must try to
throw her out, and this, by a great
effort, he did. But the rebound drove
him under water and against the wheel,
where he was in great danger of be
ing caught and held. He came - up
f gnin, however, and now a new difli-
culty confronted him. How was he to
get out himself? He sank to the bot
tom, gave an upward spring, and as
he crime up half-blinded, succeeded in
catching the top of the sluice. Then,
by the greatest exertion he drew him
self out.
The girl was etill unconscious, but by
vigorous measures was at last revived.

Th report from Washington to the
effect that 4,000 bluejackets are needed
to niau the new veBsels of the American
na.vy about to go into commission re
calls & remark made by Admiral Bumce
one day last summer, says the New
York Moil and Express. The North
Atlantic squadron lay at anchor . off
Staten Island and Father Knickerbock
er end his coumtry visitors were go
ing down to quarantine daily to look
at the splendid flghilng ships. A re
porter went aboard tilie flagship one
morning and enjoyed a pleaaant chat
with the gallant admiral. Said he:
"The type of man-of-war's-man of
te-day is far different from the old
time bluejacket, Desertions are almost
unknown from the navy now. Here Is
a vessel which cost in round numbers
12,000,000. The men- consider it their
home and they take an immemfte
'amount of prMe In It. How many men
are there ashore who can slep and
eat in a house whutb cost as much
money? Look about you and note the
faces of the bluejackets here."
The sailormen in sight were certainly
a fine-looking lot. Ihe admiral sur
veyed them admiringly and then said:
"So far us the priraonnel of the crew
oes the vessels in the American navy
ore svway almad of those of any foreign
power.

Cubs Matlock, one of our old resi
dents, but lute of Sandoo, B. C-, arrived
here on Wednesday morning, bcocjdj
panied by a fellow townsman, Edward
Bartlett. Mr. Matlock is in thn hotel
business in Saudon while Mr. Bartlett
is paoking into the mines and conduct
ing a general livery business in the
same town.
The stories of prosperity and sob
etantial boom related by our friends
from the oountrr above are enough to
excite a tenderfoot to imminent danger
ot immediate dissolution, while the
older and more experienced resident
ononot help but listen with ,wonder.
Messrs. Matlock and Bartlett Bhowed a
representative ot the Qazette some Bilver
ore wbiob assayed over fifty per cent
pure silver, and be was reminded that
there was plenty ot it np in the tiloeao
country. In the vicinity ot Sandon
there are over fifty well-developed and
paying mines.
Mr. Bartlett oomes down to buy a lot
ot mules for packing operations, and no
doubt he will seoure them in this lo
cality. Mr. Matlook, as every resident
ot this looality koows, has large ranoh
and sheep interests in this section and
be may remain here tor some time.
There is no denying the laot tbat the
Slooao eeotion is bnt in its infancy in
the prooess ot development. Sandon
but a few months old, has not less then
1500 inhabitants. It bas two railroads
electrio lights, waterworks, a $20,000
hotel, besides the many other hotels and
boarding houses, and some ot the best
paying mines In ho Hlooan seetion.
Sandon is but one ot many towns tbat
are building np from the tact of advan
tageous location.
The Qazette expects to hear ot good
reports from 8andon. It is one ot the
rioheet mining camps of the Slocan
section.
