eBU-n aai Operation
Intp la New York.
the OfBclal la Chars; Hit Trouble with
New-Fangled Clipper and Sours em
the Job Particulars of the
ProcMS.
Every year the sixty odd sheep in
Central park are shorn of their heavy
winter coats, and the wool is sold by
auction to the highest bidder. The
shearing this year was rather more in
teresting than in former years, says the
New York Tribune. It is great fun to
watch the perspiring shearers strug
gling with the frantic sheep, some of
which kick like young steers, and make
things lively for those handling them.
Some bright man suggested to the park
commission that time could be saved,
more wool taken off, and less profanity
would be provoked if the sheep were
sheared by machinery, instead of by
hand. Accordingly, a machine, which
is of a pattern in general use among
farmers, was shipped to the sheepfold
at Sixty-sixth street. The shepherd
unpacked it and gleefully expatiated!
upon the trouble and time which would
be saved by its use. In appearance it
resembles a tricycle, with the unfor
tunate sheep as a passenger, while the
pedals, worked by the operator, actuate
the clipping apparatus. The clipper is
worked by a flexible shaft, and looks
like an ordinary horse clipper. One
man can shear a sheep by hand, but
three men are required to do so by ma.
chine. The sheep is held in the frame
by one man, the pedal is worked by an
other, while the clipping is done by a
third.
When all was ready a struggling ewe
was brought and firmly held in the
wooden frame, while the shepherd,
with a determined eye, sturte I the fly
wheel humming by a vigo-ou anplica
tion of the pedal. The shc;iror grasped
,he clipper and applied it to the breast
if the unfortunate sheep. "Now you'll
.ee the wool fly," said the shepherd,
vith a wink. What wool did fly was
tot off the sheep, but off the trousers
f the man holding the animal. Her
harp hoofs made his clothes look much
he worse for wear in about three sec
mds. Meanwhile the machine had
ome to a standstill, despite the fran
.ic efforts of the shepherd.
"Why don't you pedal, man?" roared
the shearer.
The shepherd said nothing, but, wip
ing the drops from his brow, went to
work and soon had the wheel humming
again. As soon as the clipper touched
the fleece there was a slight scurry of
wool and then the machine came to a
dead stop. The shepherd refused to
pedal any more, and another man
tried it, but soon gave it up. " After
some cauntic remarks it was determined
to go back to the old way and ahear
the sheep by hand.
The machine when worked by man
power operates very wen on country
sheep, but the sheep in Central TarV
.ire ot a pure breed. Careful feeding
and housing make them grow wool at a
rate which would make a Texas sheep
farmer open his eyes. The fleeces often
run to fourteen pounds in weight and
are extremuly dense. A clipper which
will run through an ordinary fleece as
easily as a knife cuts butter, soon gets
clogged when It meets with a Jacket
such aa is worn by tha Central park
sheep.
In shearing the Central park alieep
much more care is taken than is the
case mong farmers. The sheep are
expected to present a good appearance
in the park, and grout attention 1b paid
to giving an even clipping to the coat,
After the operation the alieep are tin
ceremoniously dumped into a trough of
ink water. The suit ornithines with the
oil on the nnimal's hark, mid when vig
orously rublieil develops a soapy lather.
This cleans the skin thoroughly, and
when the ewe KcramhU' out of the
trough she is as white as driven snow.
The Mir plus sheep mid buck lntnhs
are also sold at auction, together with
the wool, and fetch high price. They
are bought by fur mors to Improve their
strain of ahi-cp bv infusing high-bred
bltHkl. Those in t'ontral purk are cer
tainly aa fine sheep aa one could wii.h
to mt, and great pride la taken in them
by the park shepherd, lie will not in

DESPISED BY CATS.
The Magpie Is a Foe That Is Feared by
the Felines.
The pets of the house were three
very large, black cats, great favorites,
immensely spoiled, and very dignified
and lazy. As we regarded the Austra
lian magpie somewhat scornfully dally
ing with his dinner, we saw one of
these solemn black monsters advancing '
at its usual dignified pace toward him.
A cry arose from the assembled family,
says the National Review: "Oh, Tigris
will kill the magpie." The head of the
family desired to wait developments.
There was a painful suspense of breath
as we watched the shaggy black
Persian advancing on the plate and
magpie with a steady, unhurried step.
The magpie stood aside from the plate,
and with head well on one side,
watched the oncoming robber. There
was a world of meaning in the glance
of that wicked gray eye, but it was all j
lost on the dignified composure of the
Persian, who without deigning to look
at the magpie, proceed to sniff at the
contents of the plate.
The bird, motionless as a statue,
waited till the black whiskers came in
quiringly over the edge of the plate;
then he made one sudden hop, lunged
once, with a lightning stroke of his
beak, at the beautiful glossy black
muzzle, and was back again in his
watchful attitude so quickly that one
almost felt disposed to doubt if he had
ever left it. There was no doubt in the
mind of the cat. That lightning stroke I
of the beak had much the same effect
on the Persian as if a bomb had burst
somewhere in its middle. It leaped
with a yell five paces backward, its
legs extended, every separate hair of
its long fur standing off it at full
length. When it reached the ground
it hesitated not for a moment; no fleet
ing notion of vengeance crossed its
mind; with head and tail depressed, in
manner as unlike as possible to its dig
nfled approach, it retreated at a good
round trot to the shrubbery whence it
had come.
NOT DAME FORTUNE'S WHEEL.
Bat II Was the Cause of Vps and Dowaa
Just the Same.
It was all about a bicycle and it waa
not an 1895 model either, nor was It the
steed of bloomery beauty. It was a
wheel that would have made excellent
junk, and it was probably the oldest of
its kind in existence.
These facts, however, made little
difference to the tow-haired urchin
who had come into possession of it,
and he was the hero of the hour among
his companions, who, after the man
ner of all sycophants, praised his some
what toilsome and serpentine method
of locomotion.
