WHY MEN SHOULD MAURY.
Celibate Um dpportanltle for Mental
mod Moral Development.
It was clearly meant that all men, as
well as all women, should marry; and
those who, for whatever reason, miss
this obvious destiny are, from nature's
point of view, failures, says the North
American Review. It is not a question
of personal felicity (which in eight
cases out of ten may be more than
problematic), bat of race responsibility.
The unmarried man is a skulker, who,
in order to secure his own ease, dooms
some woman who has a rightful claim
upon him to celibacy. And in so doing
he defrauds himself of the opportu
nities for mental and moral develop
ment which only the normal experience
can provide. He deliberately stunts
the stature bf his manhood, impover
ishes his heart and brain, and chokes
up all the sweetest potentialities of his
soul. To himself he is apt to appear
like the wise fox that detects the trap,
though it be ever so cunningly baited;
that refuses to surrender his liberty for
the sake of an appetizing chicken or
rabbit, which may after all be a decoy,
stuffed with sawdust; while as a matter
of fact his case is that of the cowardly
servant in the parable, who, for fear of
losing his talent, hid it in a napkin, and
in the end was deemed unworthy of
his stewardship.
Just Like Him.
''Mom," said a boy to his mother,
"where's the blacking?" "I don't
know," said the boy's mother, "unless
Philip's had it." Philip was the boy's
elder brother. The blacking outfit was
kept in a blacking stand in Philip's
room. lie had found it pretty cold in
his room that morning and so he had
taken the things out into the dining
room and blacked his shoes there, and
when he got through he had left the
things there. "Just like him." said
Philip's brother, and then, not finding
the dining-room quite warm enough to
suit him, he gathered up the things
and went and blacked his boots in the
kitchen, and when he got through he
left the things there.
Protecting Oyster Bods.
Private oyster beds in the upper Vir
ginia waters of the Chesapeake have
been successfully protected against
oyster thieves by a simple but ingeni
ous device. The owner of the beds,
sixteen acres in area, crossed them in
two directions with five-eighth-inch
wire secured to posts at the point of in
tersection. Both wires and posts are
invisible, even at low tide. The oyster
pirate that attacks the bed is sure
sooner or later to lose his dredge by
having It entangled in the wire, and
thefts are rare.

approve of Scott's Emulsion. For whom ?
For men and women who are weak, when they
should be strong ; for babies and children who are thin,
when they should be fat; for all who do not get from
their food the nourishirmt they should. Poor blood is
starved blood. You eat and are nourished. . Consump
tion and scrofula never come when the blood gets its
proper food. And nothing is better for starved blood
than cod-liver oil.
Scott's Emulsion
is cod-liver oil with the taste taken out. It is for all
who feel weak, have lost appetite or are losing flesh.
No one else breaks uf cod-liver oil as it is broken up in Scott's Emulsion.

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least
me dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all ita stages and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure now known to the

constitutional disease, requires h oun-

Cure is thken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mncous surfuoes of
the system, thereby destroying the foun
dation of the disease, nnd giving tbe

Extraordinary Smuggling.
The genius of the smulcr is a very
remarkable thing. If the pcneral run
of men nnd women who try to pet the
better of the custom olUciuls would
turn their ingenuity to the profession
of invention, and try to bo honest, in
the end it would prove more profitable
for many of them. One of the moat
amusiivr stories of smugglers is that
told by an englishman, who imported
into his own country a number of fine
fat geese at the Chriatmaa season many
years ago. One of them having ex
cited the Mi.'ipicionsof the inspectors by
its wonderful wel-'ht, was killed and
opened, upon which it was discovered,
says the chronicle, that there was con
cealed within It a nuuilH-r of Bmall
dutiablo articles. The rust of the
flock having Wen similarly inspected,
it wuh found that their owner had
compelled the unhappy birds to swal
low a birtre uuantity of htiifl upon
which there was a heavy duty, and
which would have oil come in free had
nut the lirst goose excited the sus
picion of thone in charge. Harper's
