there, liundreds of miles from any com
munity or home. But there have been
some circumstances connected with in
terments in the west, as known to the
cowboys of twenty-five years ago, that
was so unexpected as to be highly
humorous. One of the first funerals to
occur at Great I'end, Kan., says the
Philadelphia Times, possessed unprece
dented circumstances enough to make
it humorous, if the unexpected is an at
tribute of humor.
An old and somewhat disliked man,
Henry Turley, had been confined to his
bed several weeks by a disease which
baffled the skill of the would-be phy
sicians who attended him. He seemed to
grow steadily worse and his death was
hourly expected. Then the cold weath
er, which had continued for nearly a
month, was broken by a few spring-like
days. The citizens of the little settle
ment took Turley's case in hand and
decided that as his death was certain
to occur in a few days at most, it was
better to take advantage of the milt
weather and dig a grave for liitn than to
await his death and the probable return
of cold weather, when gruve-diggiiif
would be extremely difficult. The
grave was accordingly dug. lurlej
was so full of wrath at having his grave
prepared in advance that he rose from
his bed and the same day left town in
disgust. It appeared that he had been
shamming all the time in order to ob
tain free victuals and care. Regreti
were expressed that he had not been
buried without waiting for the usual
.preliminary of death. The pleasant
weather was soon followed by a severe
storm of snow and sleet. During the
first night of the blizzard a bibulously
inclined attorney. Godfrey by name
being, as was his wont, in an advanced

Orders a Sentry to Let an Old Man Smoke
In Peace.
The following story of a German
Diogenes is perfectly authentic. When
King Frederick William IV. visited the
Rhine pro?inces in the year 1843 he
made a short stay at 'Vesel, where he
called at the house of the oldest man
in his kingdom, aged one hundred
years. He found him comfortably
seated in an old arm-chair, smoking
pipe his inseparable companion. On
the king's arrival he rose to his fee:,
and stepped forward a few paces, but
his majesty made him sit down again,
and talked to him with the greatest
freedom, the old man puffing away at
his pipe all the time. When about to
leave, the king asked him if he had
my wish that it was in his power to
gratify.
"Jo, thanks, your majesty, I have all
I want in the world," was the reply.
"Keally! Just, think for a moment;
we mortals have generally some par
ticular desire or aspiration."
"Well, sir, now I come to think of it,
I might have a favor to ask. My doctor
insists on my taking a walk every day
on the ramparts. Every time I pass the
powder magazine the sentinel shouts
to me from afar: 'Take the pipe out
of your mouth,' and as I walk very
slowly, my pipe goes out every time.
Noav, if your majesty would be good
enough to order the sentry to let me
smoke my pipe in peace all the way, I
should consider it the greatest kindness
you could confer on me for the rest of
my natural life."
The order was given, and the old fel
low enjoyed the privilege for more than
two years, and died at last with the
pipe in his mouth.
