Down in the gulch below the rock.
The humble sheep-camp stands;
The shepherd from long keeping batch,
Has greasy clothes and hands.
I'pon a hill, a mile away,
Where coyotes nightly howl;
He meets a crowding neighbor's band,
And the sbeep-herders growl.
They talk about free-trade, wool and range,
They speak about their pay;
"Its h 1," says John, "that we have to herd
For eighty cents a day."
' I hope wages will come up again,
But the chances are mighty slim."
"I voted for Cleve myself," said Dick,
"But I'll get even with him.
"I'll tell you what we'll do," said he,
"For we're bound to have some fun;
Get Nels and John and Pat and Tom,
And we'll go to Washington.
"We will take all our dogs,
Slick, Bess, Nell and Tute,
We'll send them round, we'll drive them in,
And run them throught the shute.
"We'll separate the D's from the R's,
And bring the D's out West;
We'll make them herd all our sheep,
And we will take a rest.
"We'll put fat Cleve right In the lead,
And make him wear the bell,
The others will surely follow him,
And we'll let them go to h 1."
Death of Bob Thompson. On last
Tuesday at 7 o'clook, p. m., at Pendle
ton, ooourred the death of Robert G.
Thompson who was shot by a sheep
herder about a month ago. His death
was not unexpected as the wound was a
most serious one. Mr. Thompson's
brothers, Press, Alex and Holland, who
reside in Morrow couoty, were summoned
immediately, and were present at the
funeral, Alex being at bis bedside when
the dread messenger made the final
summons. In the death of Mr. Thomp
son, Umatilla county loses one of its
best citizens. He was a kind and gener
ous neighbor, an enterprising citizen
and a true friend. He was a member of
both the Blue Lodge and Chapter, A.
F. & A. M., at Pendleton, and was
buried under the auspices of these
orders. The memory of Robert G.
Thompson will ever be revered by all
who knew him.
Didn't Advertise. An exchange
says: A few days ago a citizen cut into
a pound of butter which he had pur
chased at a store whose proprietor
does not advertise, and found therein a
small tin box, whiob contained a pieoe
of paper bearing the following, written
in a neat feminine hand: "I am a girl
17 years, old, good-looking and an
excellent house-keeper. Should this be
found by same unmarried Christian
gentleman, will please write to the fol
lowing address," etc The finder being
a baohelor, decided to unravel tbe affair,
and suoceeded, only to destroy the
romance. Tbe girl bad died many
years ago leaving an aged husband and
a grown family.
From Idaho. Whittier Bros, write
from Mineral Ferry, Idaho, that they are
looated twenty miles from Huntington.
Their lambing was a good one, and their
wool is olean, being free from dirt and
greese, but it won't bring much, owing
to the threat of "free wool." They got
$1.25 for their yearlings and 81.60 for
two-year-olds. W. A. Fisher and Scott
Brnndage are looated near that section.
Whittier Bros, formerly resided in this
county and are very well known.

TO THE VOTERB OF MORROW COUNTY,
I am decidedly opposed to newspaper
notoriety, but the occasion demands
that I make a short statement regarding
various reports that have been circulat
ed concerning myself. I had hoped
that tbe present campaign might be
carried through in a fair and honorable
manner; and in all justice 1 believe that
to be the wish of all, except twoor three
men of our county, and 1 am glad to
sav that those two or three men are not
among tbe candidates.
Now, gentlemen, the reports tnat l am
trading, or onering to trade, any canui
date; that I have money deposited
with the Heppner saloons; that tbe
county books are not correctly kept. That
I am using funds belonging to the estate of
('has. Linde, etc., are contemptible lies,
and circulated purely to injure me as a
candidate.
The county books are subiect to, and
I invite the most careful inspection of,
the citizens of the county. 1 have not
made one ceq.t,nor have I ever made any
proposition by which I might make one
cent out of the funds belonging to the
above named estate, or any other estate,
as will be seen by the affidavits of Bishop
& Conser. I expect to be elected in a fair
and honorable wav. I have not used,
nor do I intend to use any other means
to secure the Bame, and with this end in
view, to all who can consistently and con
scientiously give me their support I shall
be very thankful. J. W. Mokrow.
