EUGENE L. FREELAND,
The republioan candidate for justice of

having been born in Albany, Linn Co.,
Jan. 23, 1866. Here be attended aobool

this state, again entering school, com
pleting bis education in tbe Ashland
Normal College in 1886, graduating at
that institution. He then followed
school teaching in Coos oounty tbe
summer of 1886, and tbe following fall
aocepted a position as book-keeper in
The Bank of ABhland, remaining thaie
until Feb. 1891, when be took a course
of stenography and typewriting in
Holmes Business College, Portland,
locating at Heppner permanently in
Marob, 1892. Until June, 1893, Mr.
Freeland held tbe position as stenogra
pher 'or the firm of Brown & Hamilton,
and at thie time became a member of tbe
firm, Mr. Brown retiring. Last Feb.
7ih, Mr. Freeland purobased Mr. Hamil
ton's interest and has smoe conducted
the business alone.
Mr. Freeland's thorough knowledge
of business and of the common law and
code of Oregon, renders him a very
competent man for the offioe of justice
of tbe peare. The business of tbe
6th,Dist. is such that often very fine
points of law have to be deoided, and
the voters of this district do not desire
to take any obapoes by eleoting an
incompetent man to thin important
position.
In politics, Mr. Freeland has always
been a republioan, supporting Benjamin
Barrison for president both in 1888 and
1892. And it tbe voters of this vicinity
desire to reflect credit and honor on (he
local judiciary, they will vote for E. L.
Freeland for justice of the peace of tbe
6th district.
EVANS AND SONTAG.
We dip the following from tbe Astori
an of May 10:
"The famous play of 'Evans and Son
tag' was produced last evening at Liber
ty hall, and will be repeated Ibis even
ing. The play is a moBt exciting
one and exoellently constructed,
with a fine oomedy vein run
ning throughout the six very interesting
acts. A more truthful story never was
portrayed upon tbe stage, or a more sal
utary lesson on the etbios of right and
wrong ever woven into a drama. The
play must be s en in order to ba appre
ciated and its many excellent features
understood. Tbe characters are all from
real life, and interpreted by a company
of real artists. Tbe incidents connect
ing the Southern Paoifia with tbe train
robbery at Collis has oaused that cor
poration considerable uneasiness, but
the manner set forth is tbe troth, as is
also every inoidentintheexcitingOBreera
of Chris Evans and John Sontag. To
nigt will present the last opportunity of
witnessing tbe famous play."
A POLITICAL FALSEHOOD.
It has been rumored that J, W. Mor
