Rev. Ii. C. Motor will hold the last
quarterly conference of the fiscal year
next Sunday, at the M. E. church, Hepp
ner. On the Sunday following, Rev.

Last Friday ' the onerntor at the
Willows found an old skeleton on the
bank of the Columbia about one-half
mile below the depot. How it oame
there is not known, though it is sup
posed to huved washed down the river.
Sherman Keeney, Tom Williams,
H. Y. Blaokwell and E. N. Crocket got
in from Long Creek Saturday morning
just in time to take the train for Port
land where they go to attend the races.
There whs n flour famine in town
yesterday; as W. A. Fisher puts it, all
the wealth of the Vanderbilts wouldn't
buy a sack in Heppner. A fresh invoice
of this article was expected last evening.
John Hayes returned Friday from
Grant oounty, where he has purchased
quite a number of sheep for Sam Kins
man and E. li. Bishop, to be delivered
here soon.
Rev. E W. Palmer, W. A. Kirk and
wife mid J. J. Adkins aud wife left this
morning to attend annua1 conference,
whioh convenes in Pendleton Thursday.
The great Conjurer, Zamloch, gives a
moBt wonderful performance. The
illusions are all choioe and new and
performed with the greatest skill.
As we go to press, word comes that
Mrs. Dan Osmers had died at an early
hour this afternoon. Mrs. Osmers had
been siok for some months.
Thompson ABinns offer to again sprin
kle the streets if their subscription is in
creased. Can't we make some arrange
ment in this matter.
V. A. Kellv and 0. B. Muel arrived
from Long Creek yesterday for freight
for the inner country. They started
out this afternoon.
Miss Anna Lewis, who has been
visiting Mrs. Annie Spenoer of this
city, departed for her home iu Salem
this morning.
J. Ball says that heading will be
finished in his neighborhood this week,
then threshing will oommenoe in dead
earnest.
Evalena Thompson arrived last even
ing from Athena and is visiting with
her brother, W. C. Thompson, of this
city.

Circuit oourt oonyenes next Tuesday,
Cattle Thieves Abroad. Brown &
Hamilton's steers were driven from
their ranch, up near .Tas. Wyland's re
cently. Only the sudden return of
Ed. Crnbtree saved them from being
taken away entirely. Ed. says there
were two of the thieves, one driving a
small bunch of steers which he thought
bore the Patberg brand. Going on
nearer the house, he was surprised to
see the bunch of steers belonging to the
ranch being driven away. As soon as
the thiaf discovered El's presence he
put spurs to his horse and soon was out
of sight. They are supposed to be a
part of the gang who are responsible for
the disappearance of the Butter creek

To Salem. Rev. J. M. Shulse reueiy
ed a telegram last evening, informing
him that he had been stationed at the
oharge in South Salem. He had in
tended sending bis three older children,
Ida, Atbelia and Arthur to the Willam
ette Uuiversity this winter, and bad
rented rooms for them, preparatory for
the winter's work, but Mr. Shulse had
not anticipated the pleasure of living in
Salem this winter where his children can
be at home. Miss Ida Shnlse left this
morning for Salem and will be followed
this week by other members of the fami
ly. Their piano aud other articles have
already been forwarded.
To Yocno People. Supt. Saling de
sires us to announce that those desiring
scholarships to the Corvallis Agricultu
ral College should first get recommen
dations from the representative and state
senator. Then the applicant must pass
examination before the county superin
tendent. The county oourt then appoints
the successful applicants. These matters
must be looked after by those desiring
to attend school there, as the county oourt
will make appointments at the Septem
ber term.

They Got Bear. Al Herren and wife
and his brother, Willard Herren, return
ed last night from the Elkhorn, where
they have been camped for the past two
week. The party Buoceeded in killing
three bears, one oiunamon, one brown
and one blaok. This makes four bears
that were killed in that neighborhood
inside of a week, as Robert Morehouse
bad killed one just before the boys killed

The suooess of Mrs. Annie M. Beam.
of McKeesport, Pennysivania, in the
treatment of diarrhwa in her children
wilt undoubtedly be of interest to many

tournament, all firemen of the Paoifio
