It is a question if any fruit could be planted on this Coast that would give better returns than the Catawba grape. It is one of the very best wine as well as table grapes and among the very best of all keepers and shippers. It sells better than any other in the Enst when of good quality. It is immeasurably finer as grown on suitable noil in California than it can be grown anywhere in the East. Catawba wine sells at double the price of our good wines. It does finely here with exactly the same culture given to common wine grapes. Bush Lima Beane, The several new strains of bush Lima beans, with beans practically the same as the old, tall, climbing, late Limas, seem to be a great acquisition, Kearly all who have tested them speak highly of them. They are somewhat earlier than the old Lima and give much greater crops to the acre. Some of the varieties are considered as finer in qual ity. They are worthy of a trial. Ashes for Rose Insects. In La Nature the statement is made that if wood ashes are Bif ted when dry over the heads of rosebushes, after tbey have been syringed with water, the ashes will adhere to the leaves, and on account of their alkaline nature will soon make it very uncomfortable for any insect peat that may Infest them. The ashes in moderate quantities will not injure the plants, but on the other hand will be rather beneficial as a fer tilizer when washed off into the soil, says the California Fruit Grower. Helpful Bints. For garden display the dwarf double zinnias are commended. These are easily grown from the seed. The Souvenir de Congress pear is large in size, good in quality and matures early, The French marigolds are free flower ing and positive in their stripes and markings. Flatheaded borers, which attack the trunks and branches of trees which have been sunburned, can be prevented from. bo doing by protecting the bark on the! south and southwest side, by the use of paper tree protectors or wrappings of old paper or sacking, says the California Fruit Grower. Large gourds may be converted into unique baskets and vases for ferns, vines and flowers. The Charlotte Cualiman gladiolus is a brilliant scarlet, with white throat and white line in each petal. The most hardy tea roses are Bougero Gerard, Desbois, Horner, Mine, de Va- try, Mane Ducher and Souibreuil.
