JT" RELICS OF BONAPARTE. ?p Articles of Apparel Worn by the TJttl Corporal In the Campaign of 1814. The last genuine relics of the first Napoleon have now been transferred from the Louvre museum to that of the Hotel des Invalides, says the London Telegraph. They comprise an authen tic "licdingote grise," which cost 180 francs at Lejeune's, and the "little hat," which was blocked by Poupard & Co. and was afterward worn by the emperor in the campaign of 1814. A great deal of dispute and discussion has arisen about these two articles, the transfer of which to the Invalides has long been delayed, s in January last a representative of the Empress Eugenie put in a claim for them as being the private property of Napoleon III., and therefore liable to be restored to their owners, like other ob iects lent to the museum. After care 'ul search there was found in the archives of the Louvre a letter dated February, 1854, signed by the imperial grand chamberlain, the Due de llassano. In which the chief conservator of the Louvre was told that tho emperor wished tho coat and hat to be placed as historical relies in the Musee des Souverains. (In the strength of this letter tho state has now asserted its rights to the curiosities, and a president tial decree authorizing their transfer to the Hotel des Invalides was issued re cently. Among tho other Napoleonic articles sent to the Invalides are a little tn-color cockade in silk, which the ein pcror wore at Fontuinebleau when bid ding farewell to the Imperial guard, and which he had in his hat when landing at Porto Ferrujc in May, 1814; a uni form of a general of division in which the first consul appeared at Marengo; a tate sword, engraved by Fillberg, of Stockholm: a ling of one of the regi ments of Cnasseurs of the guard; the seat used by the emperor in Saint Helena, and, lastly, the camp bedstead In which ho died. This object wafr given to Napoleon III. by Prince Murat. Visitors to the Invalides will soon bo able to see those interesting memen toes of the great Napoleon, which have been lying by in the Louvre since 1871 . NO NEED OF CHURCH. Sermons Supplied by Telephone by an Enterprising KiiKllah Company. The attempt to connect the pulpit of Christ church, Birmingham, England, with the telephone system is not suf fered to become a mere barren experi ment. The telephone company has lately perfected the arrangements, and Is now supplying oral sermons at pri vate residences on a rather extensive scale. Naturally, says the Chicago Hurald, it is the bed-ridden and the sick who most appreciate the advan tage of being able to hear a preacher without attending service. A dozen yards or so of loose, llexihle cord is at tached to the ordinary receiver and a special U-shaped instrument supplied to tlx on the head, with an ear box for each ear. Thus provided it is possible, it is said, for the sick to hear comforta bly while In bed. In a quiet room the tolling of a bell can be heard half an hour before Herviees; the prayers can be followed, the responses emphasized and every word of the sermon distin guished; while solos in the anthems arc. we are assured, heard as distinctly as if one stood next tho singer. Even a casual cough among the audience is .listiuguished. There is stated to be a lady at iSiiiallheiith who has been bed ridden for three years, and whose spir itual wants are thus supplied; another at IOdgbaston, who has not been able to attend church for seven years; and in the ltirminghnin jewelry 'district there are a dozen watchmen who, being on duty every Sunday, could never hear a sermon except in this fashion. Twenty four calls, representing, it is calculated, jonio sixty subscribers, are stated to have been received at tho telephone jflice from Christ church one night last week and a similar number m tho morning. Subscribers in Manchester, Nottingham, London, Coventry, Staf ford, Wolverhampton and Worcester have also availed themselves of this op portunity of being supplied with jpoken sermon at a trifling cost Pans Strove Uillwuys. The street railways of PoiMt an under the government control, nnd the rules for their guidance are very strict. Ouly four passengers are allowed to stand on the back platform, nnd they must pay the same fare as the first class passengers inside, viz., six cents, while those ou the roof of the cur ride at half rates. AND BEGONIAS. Bow to Propagate tlio Rex BegonlM from Leaf Cuttings. Begonias adapt themselves to a variety of uses. These plants ure employed in the garden for summer decoration, or as pot plants for cut flowers in winter. The tuberous begonias are now largely grown as bedding plants. Their colors are more varied and brilliant than ge raniums. The Rex begonias, with their large ornamental leaves, are also great ly prized. Begonias are increased by seeds, by divisions of the rhizomes and by cuttings which strike freely in sand and leaf mold. Leaf cuttings succeed best when laid on sand and shaded from bright sunlight. The Rex begonias may be increased in a variety of ways. A quick and easy method of propagation is shown in the accompanying cuts from The Florists' Exchange. The first figure represents a leaf cutting ready to place in the sand. X LEAJ CUTTING. A medium sized leaf may be cut up so as to give eight or ten of these tri angular shaped pieces. The size of the piece should not be over two inches each way. Put them about three-quarterg of an inch in the sand, where there is an abundance of heat and moisture. Do not pot until the plants are about the size shown in Fig. 2. Many thick and heavy leaves may be used as cuttings. Leaf cuttings are most commonly employed in the showy leaved begonias and in gloxinias, but many plants can be propagated by them. READY FOR TRANSPLANTING. Sometimes a whole leaf is used; again it is divided into two parts and again into triangular portions, as shown in the first cut. Leaf cuttings are handled in the same manner as soft stem cuttings, so far as moisture and temperature are concerned. , The First Law of Nature. 'I here exists, however, in France, says the Urauuor Bucksaw, a Mine de Variola, whr nursed wounded soldiers on the great Belgian battlefield and traversed the historic plain on the night folln'.vinir the memorable fight which scaled the fate of the first Napoleon. Mine, de Variola lives at Nantua, in the department 01 the Ain She is ninetv-eight years old, having been born in .March, 1 703. Her father, M. Carpan, who hod been em ployed in the household of Queen -Marie Antoinette, emigrated to Belgium dur ing the great revolution and bought the demesne near St. Amand which con tained within its inclosure the Bry wind mill, one of the old landmarks of Water loo. Mme. de Variola, who still retains all her faculties, relates that on June 17, 1815, her father took her and her sis ter to the windmill. White ,tliey were there Napoleon entered with an aid de camp and began to survey the country round through a telescope. Seeing the girls, he told Mr. Carpan to take them away, as a great battle was to be fought near the place on the morrow. Never theless, the family ramained in the windmill and saw some of the hghting next day. Balls and bullets fell on the roof of the building, and toward even ing a party of Prussians entered the place, one of them an officerremark ing that it was all over with the French. Shortly afterward this officer returned to the field of battle, and had not gone far before his legs were shattered by a cannon ball. At night M. Carpan went out with his children and assisted the wounded, who were mostly French. Mme. de Variola's husband was a Spaniard, who was once wealthy, but died poor. His widow is not too well off in her old age. She was formerly befriended by the Empress Eugenie, but is now supported mainly by her children. ALONE AMID SKELETONS. Th. Only Inhabitant of an Inland Where 3,000 Indians Had lleen Kuried. Two prospectors recently visited the island of San Nicholas, off the Ventura coast, with the purpose of taking up land. They found the land on the is land, which is four miles wide by twelve Ion?, utterly barren. On the western side sand is about the ouly thing seen, and this has been blown from the beach clear to the top of the island, seven hundred or eight hundred feet high. On the other side of the island, says the Ventura Free Press, they found hu man bones for a distance of five miles along the beach. They were very- thick, and it looked as if it had been a graveyard. They also discovered the remains of human bodies ou the ridge, which runs lengthwise through the land. In some places two skeletons were seen close together, as if they had been buried in tho same grave. 1 1 wind had blown off what covering of soil had been thrown over them. Bone wero thickly strewn along thii ridge for upward of three miles. From ap pearances upward of four thousand In dians must have been buried there. A shanty which hud been built on the west side was found buried clear to the roof in sand. There are now about two thousand sheep on the island, and from a sort of rough grass they seem to keep fat. The party went into cave which afforded an Indian woman. the sole occupant of the island, a home for seven years. It seems that when her party was leaving the island she lumped overboard and swam ashore the night. Years went by before she was taken off. Best Man for a Dinner Party.
