T h at th e voters of Polk county recog ently advocating th a t “to the victor belongs the spoils,” their nize his claim to a second term and th oroughly appreciate the very a ttitu d e show s th a t they believe th a t “to the kicker belongs work he has done, is the com m ent heard on every side, and th ere th e spoils.” is little question but that he will again be elected, probably by the largest m ajority ever accorded any can didate for a second term . The record m en m ake speaks fo r itself. The country cannot be deceived concerning it, and will assess it justly. W hat it chief ly expects and dem ands and w hat it will certainly be m ost surely won by is th e perfo rm an ce of duty w ithout fear o r favor and w ith out regard to personal consequences. W ith th e w om an vote of O regon as yet an unknow n facto r in our elections, th e sta n d p a tte rs a re strain in g every nerve and sinew to cap tu re it. By th e spending of m uch m oney they have brought hired em issaries into the sta te u n d er the thin guise of a suffrage m ovem ent, to defeat C ham berlain for senator. Ask yourself, Lady Voter, w ho is m ost interested in defeating C ham berlain? Is it th e w om en, whom Cham berlain has alw ays faith fully stood by, o r is it the sta n d p a tte rs who w an t the poor men out of th e senate. T he O regonian chooses to simply juggle w ith w ords w hen it de nies o u r assertio n th a t it has accused S en ato r Cham berlain ol nearly everything in th e calendar of crim es, but does not offer to subm it its flies as proof of its denial. How about a certain article it copied from th e New berg G raphic when Cham berlain w as m aking th e race before? It is not the D em ocratic papers th a t have been doing th e m ud-slinging but the high and mighty Oregonian, w hich never uses any o th e r m eans to try and discredit an opponent. T he Itendzer does not reside in a glass house, not does it support candidates, be they D em ocrats o r of o th e r political faith, who are not best fitted for the position to w hich they aspire T h a t is certainly a position th a t the O regonian can n o t take. The p o stm aster general is considering a proposition to dismiss h alf of ail the ru ral m ail carriers, increase the rem aining ro u tes tc double the p resent length, o r to about fifty miles. T he carriers und er the new system , would be paid $1,800 per year and be re quired to m ake delivery in an autom obile, lie figures th at ont c a rrie r in a m achine could cover the fifty miles a day very easily T h is m ethod would cu t down the cost of ru ral delivery 25 per cent T h e $600 would m ore th a n pay for the difference in cost betweei usin g a horse and using an autom obile. A ssum ing th a t th e rig c o st a dollar a day, th is would give the user of the automobili th re e dollars a day for m aintenance of Ills m achine. M any doc to rs an d o th er professional men travel fifty miles a day on a much sm a lle r m aintenance cost th an th ree dollars a day. B ut w ait u n til it com es to dism issing half the ru ral c a rrie rs of the United S ta te s, and there will be a protest th at can be heard half w ay to th e m oon. An appeal is going out from th e R epublican cam p to the e lecto rs of th e sta te and especially those of Polk county to “vote th e tic k e t stra ig h t.” This is the old cry of th e bosses and upoi w hich th e y base their hopes of again g ettin g into the politics saddle. T h e voters cannot be fooled so easily, how ever. Part} preju d ice h a s been broken, except in a few ra re instances, and the v o te rs g enerally have become m ore independent. T hey are using th e ir b rain s and judging for them selves w ho a re th e best men ti place in office. No longer can they be buncoed o r bullied into be lieving th a t all th e good men are in one p arty and on one ticket T h a t is th e case this year. The enfranchised m en and womei of Polk know th a t there are Just as honest, clean, capable men oi, th e D em ocratic ticket, county ami state, as th ere a re on the Re publican tick et, and in m ost cases the stan d ard is surpassed. Tin Inconsistency o f th is Republican gang cry of “vote stra ig h t” is evidenced by th e fact th a t one of the leading m em bers of the Re publican com m ittee— “m achine” would be a b e tte r word has as Burned th e d u ties of political m anager for one of th e candidates or th e D em ocratic tick et.
