A law proposed for the regulation of the practice of dentistry in this state will be on the ballot at the No vember election. Itein izer,o»e year in advance.......................................... >1 50 With Weekly Ortgonkin or 8emi-wee'»,y Journal............ 2 Ou i 0NUMENT W om en o f O rego n THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 3, 1914 With (ioat Magazine........................................................ 1 50 ’ P U flN T Q * m u ri LO. offlce’ Kesidence, !• 762 Office: No. 506 Main St. Under this new law, any capable, reputable dentist who is a graduate standing can practice dentistry in Oregon by filing a copy of his diploma with the affidavit of two citizens of the state, testifying to his good moral character. I present this law to the voters of Oregon in the interest of a much- needed reform. In five days I secured 17,190 names to the petitions for this proposed new law. Patronize One Another lor the Upbuilding oi T o w n and County. Is the consumer to be blamed if he thinks that the business that isn’t large enough to stand advertising, isn’t large enough to be worth his attention? The law as it stands now is a menace to the public welfare— because it makes Czars of the board of dental examiners, who are the servile creatures of the ethical dental trust; Because this trust seeks to keep out of the state any dentists who will not join it in pilfering the public; Because the ethical dental trust is trying to keep the public in ignorance as to the cost of dentistry and is charging the people exhorbitant prices for a poor class of work. Here’s where we get ours as the result of the European war. Congress is about to pass a law imposing a stamp tax on coca cola, base ball and “ movie” tickets. If this war between the hotels keeps up much longer it may assume the famous “ stage-coach war,” where the public was offered liberal premiums to induce it to patronize one or the other o f the rival concerns. When I came before the Oregon Dental Board for exam ination, the members of the board knew me and they deliberately denied me a license. T hey knew I would give th e ethical dental trust the hardest competition it has ever had, and they thought th a t by branding me an incompetent and a “ quack” they could drive me out of the state, as they have done scores of other dentists. By the time this foreign scrap is over, there will be a lot of American consumers who will have become acquainted with the fact that the United States has as good “ made in America” stuff for us as any of the “ made in Germany or any other country” stuff. And that knowledge will be worth considerable. The day is rapidly approaching when a cost system will be ap plied to farm work and farm management. Then it will be that the former will realize the value of his time, and there will be a great increase in the products of his acres. The more successful farmers these days are the men who attach value to their time, and who do not lay off and go fishing or visiting regardless of the work there may be to do on his farm. This applies to other classes of business as well. But I did not run. I determined to stay and fight. I am confident th a t I know as much den tistry as any mem ber of the ethical dental trust, and I have forgotten more about dentistry than lots of them know. I am a graduate of the Phila delphia Dental College, one of the best known and second oldest dental schools n America. I have practiced dentistry fo r neary tw enty-five years. I am now licensed to practice in the states of New York, Maine, Pennsylavnia, Illinois, C alifornia and in Canada. DUTY TO OREGON FIRST. In a recent letter to Postmaster Fiske, Senator George E. Chamberlain says in part: “ 1 regret exceedingly my inability to return to the state as I had hoped, but I feel that I would be i recreant to my duty if I left here while so many emergency measures are pending and legislation which vitally affects the welfare of the state.” This is the true Chamberlain spirit and one which our senator has always shown when given a duty to perform by the voters of Oregon. The opposition has accused him of nearly everything under the sun, and mostly of being a politician first, last and all the time, but they have never yet been able to truthfully say that he was ever in any way neglectful of the duties entrusted to him, nor that he was not the very best man obtainable to carry out the purposes desired. Chamberlain is a man who does things, no matter in what office you place him, and Oregon will go back on her own interests if he is not continued as one of our workers in congress. Do you believe that if I were incompetent and a “ quack” that I could procure a license in these states? Doesn’t that show you that I am a com petent dentist and that the Oregon Dental Board is simply trying to destroy me because I won’t join their so-called ethical clique? I have faith in the fair-mindedness of the peo ple of Oregon. I don’t believe they want to give special privileges to any clique or class of men. I charge the dental tru st of Oregon with being an organization in restraint of trade, lo r the rea son th a t it seeks to prevent competition and keeps other dentists out of the state; I charge it w ith being un-Am erican, because it is opposed to fair-p lay; I charge it w ith being a detrim ent to the public health, because it is using obsolete methods in the practice of dentistry and is breeding dangerous drug habits by using cocaine and arsenic. GETTING RESULTS. The investigation ordered by President Wilson was hardly fairly started by the attorney general a few days ago until sugar took a drop of 50 cents per 100 pounds. The upward trend of other food stuffs suddenly stopped and are now going downward. Fact is, there has been no excuse for the big raise in sugar and other food stuffs. The raise has been attributed to the European war; that was made an excuse for playing a holdup game on the consumer, that’s all. The retailers have not been to blame, but it has been the “ higher-ups” from whom the retailers had to buy. We read that in Paris, France, right in the country where a state of war exists, food stuffs are lower today than in 20 years, and yet our wholesalers made the European war an excuse to raise the price of food stuffs right and left. The sudden sky rocketing of sugar prices was the most outrageous and absurd of all, for immediately after the investigation was started it was learned that in San Francisco alone there was stored more than 750,000 bags o f sugar for which, a few weeks ago, no market could be found— enough sugar to supply the demand of this country for more than three months. President Wilson has always been alert to the welfare of the masses, the consumers, and when he witnessed this hold-up game on the part of some aggregation of men, he at once instructed his attorney general to get busy and prosecute wherever the law will permit. It is pretty certain that before he is through he will make some one dance to the music of Democratic honesty. Equalization Board Meeting. THE LIFE CAREER OREGON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE Four months ago I opened a dental offlce in the city of Portland, containing fourteen chairs. Soon thereafter I was compelled to put in two more, and now I am enlarging my offlce so that I can put in four additional chairs, making twenty in all. I have the largest practice of any dentist in Port land, and the ethical dental trust knew that I would soon have the largest practice here, because the same thing has resulted in every city in which I have established an offlce. That is the real reason why they wanted to put me out of business here. ' Every dentist in my offlce in Portland is a grad uate of experience and has been given a license to practice by this Oregon board before it was known that they were a part of the Painless Parker or ganization. Nearly every one of them had to come here as strangers to take the examination. If it had been known that they were to work for me, the board would have refused them a license, as it refused me a license. Do you believe th a t to m ake a success of your business is a crim e? Should I be branded a quack and run out of Oregon simply because I am a suc cessful dentist? If I have evolved newer and better methods of ta k in g care of your teeth, should I not be entitled to do the work and should you not have an opportunity of having me do the w ork? If the ethical dental trust is a good thing, why does it not come out in the open and show why and how it is a “ good trust?” Calling me names and tryng to drve me out of the state desn’t prove anything, nor does it show that the dental trust is a patriotic organization. I have established an offlce on the second floor of the Merchants Trust building, comer of Sixth and Washington streets. I have here competent and finely equipped dental specialists, who use the most scientific methods known to dentistry. Neither cocaine nor arsenic is used in my offices, yet all of our dentistry is done without pain. We give the best of dentistry at a reasonable price, and guarantee our work to be satisfactory. It is up to the voters of Oregon to say whether this Oregon dental trust, which has control of the dental board of the state, shall be permitted to continue to brand capable dentists as quacks and charlatans and refuse them a license to practice in this state. T h in k it over and vote right. Dr. Parker delivered an address in this city last night at the comer of Main and Court streets to a large and interested audience and will lecture again tonight at the same place. It is worth hear ing. Your health depends as much on your teeth as upon your stomach. You are personally interest ed in Dr. Parker’s lecture. Hear him.
