HOME AND FARM MAGAZINE SECTION It Marvels of Everyday Science Competent Scientists Apply Their Skill to Problems of Agriculture1 Housekeeping, Schools, Business and Governmental Activities. IN G E N IO U S w aybilling machine recently invented automatically weighs a package and computes the charge for shipment at any given rate per 100 lbs., and then prints on the w a y b ill both the weight and the charge. This machine has the appearance o f a cylindrical computing scale and works on much the same principle. In using, the package is placed on the platform o f tho scale and the mechanism is al lowed to come to rest, when it indicates the correct weight. A double row of wire-bound boxes showed greates resist ance and, altogether, this class revealed well-balanced construction. The tonguo- and grove joints o f dove tailed cases were weak features o f construction, a l though this style stood up well in the diagonal compression test, under which nails pulled out in the nailed boxes. * * * A Handy Umbrella* H E N an umbrella is in use the most desirable place under it is occupied by the handle. A clever inventor has solved tho problem by de vising an umbrella with a jointed han dle, as shown here. When the umbrel W keys occupies the front o f the scale, and the ono o f these corresponding to tho rato per 100 lbs. for the given dis tance is then depressed. This results in a further revolution o f the mechanism, and at the same time a full record of the weight and charge is printed on the waybill. The wnybilM s inserted at the back o f the cylinder and the printing is done by means o f keys that strike a typew riter ribbon and produce au ink impression on tho paper. * * * Figh ting a Duel Wjftli a Spring Target. Health and Sanitation LM OST any ache about the head is dubbed neuralgia, and yet not one person in a million probably ever stops to think what tho word actually means. A compound from the Greek root neuron (n erve ) and algos (pain ), the person who has neuralgia believes it is truo to its derivation, whether or not it is just as applicable to pains in other parts o f the body. So fa r as the word goes, it is just as applicable to a pain in the knee as in the head. The pain o f neuralgia is evidence that omething has happened to tho aching nerve. I t may be tho result o f pres mre on the nerve or irritation from mcmia, poisoning, strain, loss o f sleep, .»out, kidney distempers, or even a brok •n bone, a mass o f scar tissue, a swol len gland, a muscle spasm, a growth or he dislocation o f a joint. Things that ou may have eaten, or poisons taken nto tho system may be the cause. The •ure is to find out first i f there be any mpingement o f tho nerve; i f not, then you want to change your habits o f liv- ng. A n y drugs that inay be taken will also act upon all the other nerves o f the body equally with tho ones that are giv- ng pain, so that they should never be employed unless absolutely necessary, vhen everything else tried has failed. The nutrition o f the body is the one thing essential. A averaged 92 per cent in their school work; those in the other room averaged but 72 per cent.
