John W. Orr. I wisn to announce my candi dacy for the Democratic nomi- nation for Commissioner of Poik county, subject to the will of the voters at the primary election on May 15th. George Clanfield. (P a id A d v e rtise m e n t.) I® >1 o £. April 25th has been set aside as “Good Roads Day” in Oregon and on that date it is expected that not less than 2,000 husky men from the Portland Ad. Club and similar organizations will don overalls, arm themselves with pick and shovel, grab their trusty dinner-pail and go forth to do a more or less serious day’s work on the roads. The O. W. U. N. Ry. will run a train of Hat cars to various points on the Columbia River Highway and the gas company and various contracting Arms will loan the necessary tools. Governor West and the county road officials will be present to see that the amateur laborers do no loafing on the job. All other parts of the state are expected to fall in line and the aggregate result should be many miles of well im proved roads. Friend Abel Uglow appeared before the city council the other evening and scored us for asserting that the city of Dallas with being mulcted of several hundred dollars of taxpayers’ money in paying the price It has for his land to be used as a septic tank site. We are not blaming Mr. Uglow for the stand he takes in the matter, as all of us want the best possible price for what we sell. Neither can we really blame the mem bers of the committee. One of them was a gentleman not a resident of our city or in any way conversant with the value of its land, while the other two committee men own land in close proximity to the site purchased and naturally were somewhat biased in their judgment. The committee should have been made up of taxpayers of the town and entirely disinterested parties. Land or any thing else always looks considerably more valuable to the owner thereof than it does to any one else. Some wag of a newspaper correspondent a few weeks ago published in a number of newspapers throughout the country a paragraph that has brought thousands of letters to the director of the mint from every section of the country, asking that he send them $34.90 as his or her share of the per captia circulation of themoney of the United States. The correspond ent stated in his dispatch that that amount would be due every man, woman and child in the United States if Uncle Sam’s money were divided up, and thousands have actually believed that by writing to the treas ury department they would receive the money. A form letter in reply to the vast number of these letters has been gotten up in the bureau of the mint to dis abuse the minds of those who were misled, but it has kept several clerks busy for many days smply address ing the envelopes tothe misguided applicants, many of whose letters begging that the money be sent at once are pathetic. A pleasurable and instructive occasion at the Meth odist church last Sunday evening was the introduction into the pulpit of a man oi the world to make tne talk of the evening. Rev. Hennett hud prevailed upon Bar- rister W. L. Tooze, Jr., to give an address on the trial, conviction and execution of Jesus as viewed by a lawyer from the standpoint of law. A crowded house greeted the speaker, and his remarks on the subject were logical and backed by authorities hard to dis claim. Mr. Tooze went into the subject deeply, and the conclusions he arrived at met the approval of all his hearers. He clearly demonstrated that Jesus was irregularly tried and without warrant of law, such as was provided by the old Jewish courts-- generally the greatest sticklers for decorum and justice of all courts of the times, not excepting the Roman courts, the founders of considerable of our basic principles of law of the present day. While Mr. Tooze deplored the manner of arrest and trial, yet he held that the ver dict was the only one allowable by the evidence, when even the accused testified against himself, and vir tually admitted the great crime of blasphemy, should he not have been the person he claimed. I T IS W HISPERED. That Dallas is to have another rural delivery route. That the Observer has again changed hands. That Home-made should ap ply to Home Trade. That some recalls are serious ly talked of regarding certain officials. That if all Dallas iand owners could dispose of their land at pro rata septic tank prices, most of us would sell pretty pronto. That when it comes to pick ing up new material for his ball team, our manager has the goods on all of them. That those who have tried the new cigarette cure find it a de lusion—its effects only continu ing for a couple of hours, and it not In any way relieving the de sire to smoke. That it would have been in good form to have had the menus for the Oregon-made banquet printed on Oregon- made paper instead of on east ern-made stuff. That Monday morning some one had the audlcity to tear up a crosswalk in North Dallas without orders from headquar ters. Crosswalks are the only protection that small children hare from speeding autos and motorcyclea. This matter might be looked Into by the authori ties That our base ball nine have all enlisted. That base ball and politics have hud to take a back seat for the war. That if you want to vote at the primaries you will have to hurry and register. That it does not look as if Good Roads Day was to be very seriously observed in Polk coun ty- That many are wondering why a secretary is employed by the commercial club as there is no visible use for such an official. That all kinds of rumors can now be expected over the wires, such as the reported assassina tion of Charge d’AfTairs O’Shan- nesey yesterday. That Wilson did not wait on congress’ slow action, but or dered Vera Cruz taken and Huerta's guns and ammunition captured. Runaway Accident. | Tuesday while J. S. Macom- ber was hauling manure on his farm at Oakdale, on going down a hill, the tongue broke, anu all were precipitated over the bank The harness came out of the re sultant inlxup entirely oblitera ted, and the wagon was badly demolished. Mr. Macomber was stmek by the wheel and his back badly hurt. He Is wondering thla morning how he came out of the tuixup alive.
