T he O r -ly 33 e p a . s c r a t l e F »p »r In F o lic C o u n ty for any need that may arise. j town is just as much benefit to the town as if in its borders, and does an injustice to no one. I f you desire a county fair to be an entire success and patronized by everybody, one of the first considerations should be the acquirement with the grounds o f an ideal camp site. Many families there are all over the valley who after their hop and prune picking would like to continue their tent outing, and also take in the fair. If we strike the weather right in the fall, there is no more beautiful time in the year for outdoor life, and to have ours a suc cess provision can and must be made for campers, and lots o f them. Father, mother and all the children can in that way come and take in the fair all week, at not much more than it would cost for a day in town other wise. And they will do it if given the opportunity. This is only one reason for holding the fair outside our limits, and we ask the fair board to think this matter over carefully and earnestly before deciding. It is much easier, gentlemen, to avoid mistakes now than it will be to correct them in the years to come. THE. POLK COUNTY ITEM IZER.! * A-luut t e l to the «ecuud claw* at uiail m atter. Dallas did not pretend to-hhve a sane Fourth, yet there were no accidents reported. The young people had the time of their lives, as far as explosives were concerned, using common sense in the matter, and there was not even a runaway to mar the great celebration. Another council meeting has been held and no move has been made to pave this year the principal transpor tation thoroughfare o f our town. Are we to have this disgrace thrust upon us for another winter season be cause the councilmen think they cannot finance the project? Fortubbie’s information we will state that hi3 name is to be spelled t-u-b-b-i-e f-o-s-t-e-r, and that neither it nor him are o f sufficient importance to render capit alization at all necessary. Additional information for t-u-b-h-i-e: There is only one person who is running the Itemizer, and his name appears at the head o f the editorial columns—in order to get out the best paper in the county it is not necessary for us to have several henchman on the streets. Again goes up the cry for an Oregon stone for a beautiful new Portland federal building, yet Dal las puts in no bid for it. A temple to the worth o f our stone stands before us every day, yet we sit with folded hands and let an opportunity for utilizing the rock in our nearby hills go calmly by. Some day the value o f this rock will be recognized, and the quarrying o f it will be going on night and day. Why not put it in our large government buildings now, instead o f waiting for the future? Studio: 712 Oak St., Dallas, Oregon Htu _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Polk has again been signally honored by having one o f her favored native sons advanced by election to a po sition o f great responsibility and trust. Senator C. L. Hawley will make good, beyond question, as one o f our Panama commissioners. On him and his four associ ates depends the proper spending o f a large sum of money, and so that it will be o f advantage to the state in an advertising way. Economy and lavishness must go hand in hand to achieve the desired results, and it will take men o f experience, o f financial ability, and more than average brain calibre to secure the proper returns for the money invested. Many wise men o f our state would shy at the job, recognizing the ultimate ob ject and the work necessary thereto. The Itemizer desires to once more protest against the putting of our county fair buildings within the city lim its of Dallas. Experience o f all eastern county fairs has been that such a location is not in any way desire- able. and frequently tend to complications that work to the detriment o f the fair. The future cannot always be governed by the record of the past, and it should be the duty o f our fair board to in as far as possible pro vide for all contingencies that may arise. The fair grounds should be on a line o f railway, where exhibits, stock, etc., can be handled and put in place without re hauling—right from the cars. On the S. F. C. & W., a little ways out o f town, would be an ideal location, where probably two or three times the acreage could be secured for the same money as it is now proposed to pay for 15 acres. There is no telling into what our fair will develop, and now is the time to buy sufficient land IJOTICE is hereby priven that pursuant to and by virtue o f an order o f the county court o f the State o f Oregon fo r Yamhill county, setting in probate, nnd duly made and entered o f record in said court, on the 2nd day o f June. 1913. in the matter o f the estate o f Rex D.
