The people of the states are desirous o f securing the results o f the Geological Survey’s work at a faster rate than they can be furnished with the appropriations provided therefor by Congress. Instead o f using the funds to carry on in dependent investigations o f the same kind, the States apparently realize that it will be better for them to make use o f the equipment and qualified corps that the Geological Survey has accumulated and established for such work. In every state in which cooperation has been maintained the saving in expenditure and the re sults accomplished have been so great that the desira bility and practicability o f the arrangement have been proved beyond question. That was quite a storm last Saturday night and Sunday, and the deep sea vessels knew there had been some blow. But our old ocean kept faithfully to her name, and there was no loss o f life, nor vessels. On the Atlantic the hardships endured were frightful, the terrible cold making life on the ocean one to be shunned. Oregon will not only show off its fruit and farm products, its prize cattle and magnificent timber at the San Francisco exposition in 1915, but if present plans mature, the showing from this state will include the best baby boy and baby girl in Oregon. In this, Oregon will have to compete with children from other states who will be entered in a national eugenics show which is to be a feature o f the exposition. - V s B t T T C N TtlAjN £ MRS. Several attempts have been made by the state game warden, William L. Finley, to buy Bob-white quail in the eastern states, for liberating in certain parts o f Or egon. The Bob-white is a very desireable bird, howev er, and other states are guarding carefully the supply they now have. Some sections o f Oregon are already pretty fairly stocked with Bob-white quail. "W e can easily stock almost all parts o f our state with these va rieties o f quail,” said Mr. Finley, if we can secure reli able parties to trap the birds and ship them under our directions. We are anxious to get in touch with any one who is in position to trap quail. We are willing to pay for the birds, and shall arrange to have them sent either to the state game farm at Corvallis or direct to the places where we want to liberate them.” "In parts o f the Willamette Valley, and in sections o f eastern Or egon; Bob-white quail are quite abundant. These birds will thrive well in southern Oregon, and the people in that part of the country are anxious to have them intro duced. In southern Oregon, the California or Valley quail are abundant, and yet we may have none of these birds in the Willamette valley, although they would thrive here and make a splendid addition to our supply o f game birds.” Both the California quail and Bob- white quail are insect and weed seed eaters. They are not only excellent game birds, but are most valuable birds from the economic standpoint about any farming community. It is strictly against the law to trap any game birds in the state o f Oregon, yet the state game warden can by special written permit grant this privi lege for scientific and propogation purposes. While the annual number o f deaths on our Ameri can railroads is appalling it would be unfair to charge them all against the roads. The truth is a very large proportion o f many o f such deaths is that o f tramps who trespass on the tracks and thereby endanger their lives. The best plan to prevent such slaughter is to follow the European plan o f prohibiting tresspassing and to see that trespassers are punished. Of course it is hard to enforce such a law in a country so vast as this and especially in places ' emote from cities or large towns, but it can be done to a much greater extent than it is now. Trf* Makes Whiler.lish ter ftread W H O C A N T R A P Q U A IL . As usual the state fair is laboring under a deficit, ow ing principally to the time o f year which they will per sist in holding the event, and it will probably bring about a concerted move on the part o f certain sections to move the fair to the metropolis. All in this section would hate to see the fair moved from Salem, but when an association will persist in catering alone to the race track men as the time o f holding the fair, they should expect nothing else. We will soon have again in operation our state leg islature, and for forty days the wise men o f the differ ent counties o f the state will be assembled in a manly endeavor to further tangle up our laws under the impres sion, no doubt, that they are doing the people o f the state a great favor. It is understood that Governor West will this term take quite a hand in getting through what is thought to be needed legislation. If he is able to push his ideas through, undoubtedly some beneficial laws will be ad led to the statute books. From the out look now the legislators wi 1 be inundated with all kinds o f bills at the ojeni lg of the season, sufficient if given careful attention, to keep each legislator busy for the next year. One o f the main ones calling for the expen diture o f state funds, will be that o f appropriating money for the big cunal exi»osition at San Francisco, gome o f the legislators being in favor o f a half million appropriation, and the rest from that sum on down.
