Then let us all eat, laugh and be merry, while we may, and wot not of the trials or trib ulations that may be ours on the morrow. For health, for life, for happiness, For the good things spread before us, And for a God above, Let us be truly thankful IW Main St. »■ici — ■ Mg p w f t f — This is the day we eat turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and all the other New England fixings so good to the days of our boyhood. How well do we re member the anticipation in our small hearts, when with nearly bated breath we awaited the many happinesses to come to our small life on that eventful day. and how on the several days before we took a peculiar interest in the culinary operations of the women folks in preDara- tion for the grand final. How we fetched and carried without a murmur, certain that mother, aunt or some of the rest of them would reward our ever ready stom ach, lips and jaws with some of the prized ingredients of the many concoctions, or allow us thè special privi- ledge of licking the dish after they had been scraped with the spoon. Though these wonderful joys of child hood are but a matter of memory to us now, and hold no interest other than that, yet they remain vivid in our mind, and cause us to many times wish they were back once more. Then there was also the anticipation of the numerous relatives that would flock on invitation to the old roof tree, to recount the many adventures of the y?ar or years since they had last visited us, to all of which we listened with opened ears, especially when there had been some great traveler amongst the throng, and every room in the house was crammed to double ca pacity, making our nights even one of such excitement that the god of slumber was a hard one to woo success fully. To say nothing of the visits of the other children of our own age, to all of whom the old fashioned attic was given over in which to romp and play at our own sweet will, making as much noise as we desired, except once in a while wheh it became entirely too loud, and a deputation came from down stairs, with laughter and good will on their faces, to beg of us that we try and control our everescent spirits in a small degree at least. The proudly showing of our treasures to the other child ren, the caring for of our pets, with the others to watch and envy our possessions. Then the night before, that nearly the big time of the year when 9 o’clock held no terrors for us unless we got too rambunctuous, but were allowed to sit up with the big folks and listen with open mouths to the tales of travel, the songs by talented mem bers of the family, the great performance at midnight, when the delicious things that had been roasting in the big fire place were dragged out, cooked to a turn, and the way we feasted was something wonderful. Put to bed on a full stomach, despite the anxiety for our health displayed by a solicitous grandmother and others, we ihowed no ill effects, and a big romp, was the program until dad came in with his positive orders, and we snug gled down in the big feather beds, secure from cold, and were soon in the arms of Morpheus. The late hour of going to bed did not keep us from waking up bright and early, and our pillow fighting soon made the older ones anxious to also arise and get rid of the noise. Thus began the grand day itself, with the climax about 1 o’clock, when having waited with straining ears and puckered mouths, afraid that the older ones were su>-e to eat up all the good things, we were at last marshalled *nto the second table, and found that our every desire had been prepared for and that we could fill our little tummies to repletion and then some. Oh, the joy of it. Do we ever find anything in this age to half equal it? Not by a long shot. Principally because we have lost the zest that goes with youth, and because those happy family reunions are to a great extent dying out in the rush of business that now envelops the American peo ple. We are all too busy to fittingly prepare for such events, or to give the time to them that we should. Very few families can now spare the time or take a week off to make a long journey to the old homestead, and revive the ties of kinship as wa did in thos> days. Our business demands too much of our attention, and the most of us give only a few sea nt hours to the cele bration of our national day of Thanksgiving, keeping open our places of business in the morning, at least un til church time, if we even give that much to the day, rushing home and downing an extra good feed, and back to work again. The old fashioned way is gone forever, but its object should remain in our breasts, and we should all endeavor to cultivate and observe the day as much as is in our power. We have everything to be thankful for at this the near end of 1912, Bounteous crops have been ours, good prices have in nearly every instance been received for them, the business failures of the hist year havs been fewer than for many years bqfqre. nearly every one that wanted a job has been able to secure it, and at a good wage, and there is no cause for growling at the times or anything in general. The nation has just pass ed through a national election that for once has caused no disturbance in business affairs, not even a ripple on the surface, and we are facing a new year with every thing to the good and no kick coming. No cloud of war darkens our horizon, and while the nations of the other continent may soon become embroiled in a historical and far reaching struggle, we are practically exempt from the sa m e in any other way than that of benefit a rising for an extra demand for our products. As a state we are all to the mustard. Besides the national reasons for Thanksgiving mentioned above, we have added greatly to our population, our lands are being more thickly settled, we are having a railroad development Several of our democratic newspaper brothers in the valley, Kirkpatrick, of Lebanon. Porter, of Albany, Godfrey, of Salem, and others are out for postoffiee honors. Most of them have never before asked any thing of the party for which they have so faithfull labored these many years, and they should be given what they now request without even opposition. There are too many who value not the influence of a good pa per, until they come out for office, and then they tum ble all over themselves to get its support. The rest of the time it would starve to death for all the help they are to it, giving their cash business to help the opposi tion in many instances. Such the Itemizer does not class as democrats and but bides its time for a thorough straightening out of accounts. Take Porter, of the Al bany Democrat, for instance: For 30 years he has against large odds plead week after week with the peo ple in order to show them that the principles of democ racy are the just and right thing for all classes. It has taken years of this continuous education to bring about the results, but it did come at last, after the people got their eyes open to the very things that the brainy edi tor was able to see far in advance and to warn against. He has' continually advocated what he believed to be right, and at last the public of Linn county caught on and helped to elect a man as president who will carry out the principles he has striven to get adopted for so many years past. It has taken a continual hammering to bring this change of sentiment about, but Porter did it, helped by a couple of other democratic papers in that County. That these years of Labor shoutd go unrequited is not justice, in fact the postoffice appointment is but small compensation for the labor performed, through many years, as we know it, of considerable financial embarrrssment, and if any one person is fully deserving of the plum, as it is called, it is Porter.
