years ago had such poor luck in alighting from the parachute, the
first day going into the sawdust heap at the big mill, and the next
day through the window at the Lacreole club.
Captain Kearns, who does the high dive, is proficient in his
act, and his performance has elided much favorable comment.
Prof. Doan, the 40 inch midget, is the admired of all the ladies,
and is quite an acrobat, being especially proficient in ring work.
A too heavily loaded transformer caused a cessation of incan-
descents light on the main blocks last night for half an hour, and
lost the shows many of the customers they would have had if the
people had not grown tired o f waiting and gone home.
Early this morning, when we were compelled to make our vis
it to the exhibit sheds, found them in an embryotic state, the car
penters still at work and all exhibits not in. But everything was
being hurried as rapidly as possible, with new stock coming in and
being assigned quarters every minute.
A t the large tent donated by Mr. Arnold for the occasion on the
corner o f Mrs. Anna Coad’ s Main street property, we found chick
ens galore. The school childrens’ exhibit occupies one entire aide
o f the large tent, and they have thirty coops o f tine fowls, besides
a number occupied by ducks, rabbits, turkeys, guinea-pigs, and
other things. The rest of the space is occupied by the Poultry As
sociation with 50 coops o f their best fowles; and the whole show
is certainly a delight to every fancier. Hon. B. F. Keeney is
present and ready to begin judging as soon as they are ready for
him.
A t the Riley building on Washington street 76 stalls have
been built. Thirty-four o f them are for horses, and they are all
engaged. Prof. F. L. Kent, o f Corvallis, O. A. C., will be the
judge o f this section.
There 32 cow stalls, and they are filling up rapidly with supe
rior animals of the different breeds. Frank Lynn, o f Perrydale,
has there his noted Jersey that won the A. J. C. C. medal at the
state fair, with a record of 657 pounds o f butter a year.
Main street in front o f this office is occupied by a 170-foot long
shed for the housing of sheep, goats and hogs, o f which a credita
ble exhibit is now being installed, There are two dozen pens and
more can be quickly added if necessary. R. G. Hoag, of Eola, will
judge this exhibit and the cattle.
At the armory the first thing that caught oureyew as the Votes
for Women booth that Mrs. J. E. Sibley and Mrs. Harriett Smith
are fixing up. Inside the big auditorium was a blaze of tasteful
decorations to set off the beauties on exhibit and an army o f ladies
and many masculines were working hard on the finishing touches.
The school exhibit occupies one-half of the armory and is a won
derful showing, comprising everything grown outdoors. All kinds
o f cookery and needlework. Mr. Seymour says there will be 500
or 600 exhibitors and his quandry is where to put it all. On the
east side of the hall the county has the back end and the major
portion is taken up by the Horticultural society, who surely are
showing good stuff in every line. We would like to go into details
o f the exhibits, but it would take columns to do so. Everything
is the bept possible and the fair a wonderful success. The judges
have not yet been determined on.
NOTES:
Frank Morrison, A1 Snyder and Jake Crider were at Salem
yesterday, and the Board o f Trade took them in hand and promised
100 business men here from the capital city on the excursion to
morrow.
E. D. V. Paul brought his fine black Percheron in this after
noon for exhibit. It weighs about a ton, stands him 4000, and is
fine specimen o f horse flesh.
Since our first writeup this morning the weather clerk chang
ed his mind; and we are now having na3ty weather for the fair.
The auto parade, Arnold’s open air attractions, an address by
Senator Chamberlain, a band concert, and Arnold’ s shows are the
attractions for the balance o f the day.
Mr. Arnold kindly tendered his band to welcome Senator Cham
berlain at the 11:10 train this morning and escort him down town.
He rode in an auto, accompanied by Dr. V. C. Staats and Chairman
Oscar Hay ter.
